- 7 Reasons to Exercise that are not Weight Loss
Yes, I know most people come to see someone like me for an external reason, like wanting to lose weight.
That is perfectly ok. It’s a pleasure to be able to help in that capacity.
When old clothes fit again, and the reflection in the mirror looks much more streamlined, it’s a great feeling.
However, the funny thing is that most of the hundreds of people I have worked with over the past decade-plus are often more pleased about other areas of their life.
They feel happier - in a better overall mood.
They live better - feeling more alive with fewer aches and pains.
They stay stronger - picking stuff up that they had thought was well out of reach years ago.
They sleep deeper - and feel more awake with more energy throughout the day
They think faster - exercise increases blood and nutrient flow to the brain.
They burden others less - the realisation that as they age, the healthier they are, the less strain they are on family and friends in the years ahead.
They inspire their children or grandchildren - depending on when they initially had children. Kids love to see their parents exercise and get involved.
Having more energy is a big one, time and time again.
Yes, ‘looking’ better is fantastic, but I would argue that feeling better trumps that upon reflection. (Naturally, the two are synergistic, though in many cases)
What are your thoughts?
Do any of those 7 stand out for you?
Would you make any additions?
Tom
- Every master was once a disaster!
Did you ever wake up and find you were amazing at something new, having never done it before?
Yes, me neither.
Everyone you see who has a talent at something has likely worked very hard over a lot of time to foster that talent.
This is great to know, as if you put effort into anything, chances are you'll get better at it.
This is as long as you are doing it correctly!
If you are doing something incorrectly, then chances are you'll be getting further away from your target rather than closer to it.
This can be an issue today, and let's take my specialist subject, weight loss, as an example.
Google 'weight loss', and you'll get 5.160.000.000 results. I have copied that figure directly from Google.
Excellent, lots of help, but naturally, in that considerable number, there are lots of great correct ways to do things, lots of okay ways, lots of incorrect ways and then everything in between.
Add in that certain people will get great results with the system 'X', while that has no effect on someone else.
You are busy, so spending time trying to work out what works, and then if that actually works for you, is wasting your time (which you'll never get back) and your money (no one likes to waste that).
You then spend more time and money trying other things, and the spiral continues until you either luck into something that works, or you quit.
People try something that someone recommends or that some influencer promotes, and it does not work, and then they get discouraged.
Remember those masters that were mentioned at the very start. They all got where they were thanks to having the proper guidance for them over the time it took them.
If you want to invest your time into your most important asset, namely you, then DM me, and we can look at where you are right now and where you want to get to.
This takes 15 minutes and is on me.
You can then make an informed choice if investing your money with me is wise, just like it has been for many people like you over the past decade and much more.
It is time to master this once and for all.
SmartHealth
PS - I am sure you read about DM'ing people many times a day/week.
Sometimes, pulling the trigger to get a conversation going can be the hardest thing to do.
I know it has been for me when initially contacting coaches over the years.
Some I ended up working with, and others I did not.
However, taking action has always led to better things. Find someone you resonate with, and then get the wheels in motion.
Time waits for no one.
PPS There is never a perfect time. To make progress, the time is now.

- Anyone used Threads yet?
- What is your number 1 health tip?
- The low-hanging fruits of health!
All of these are free to do, but how many are you doing?
I mean, doing consistently?
1) Breathing - Deeply in and out through the nose. Maximal breaths. The diaphragm is the first muscle we should all be working every day and throughout the day. 100% inhale into the belly, fill the lungs. 100% exhale, not leaving any air behind. Be intentional about doing this for a few breaths throughout the day. Your immune system and energy levels will thank you for it.
2) Sunlight - Get outside and get exposed. We evolved over many generations by being outside. We have been shut in buildings only in recent years, and if you WFH, then getting sunlight is all the more critical.
3) Walking - 6,000 to 10,000 Steps. As I always say to clients and anyone that wants to listen, look to do a little more than last week. Once doing more becomes unrealistic, speed things up or fill a backpack with some weight for some walks. You can choose routes with more inclines too.
4) Drinking Water - 2 to 3 litres per day. It is summer now, well it is here in Spain. It is hot! You should add another litre if you exercise (for every 30 minutes). An electrolyte or pinch of sea salt helps keep minerals up and headaches away.
5) Sleeping - 7 - 9 hours per night. Easier said than done when you have a 7-month-old and a nearly 3-year-old like me. Ha, if you can get sleep, then please take it. Many books have been written on why sleep is so important. You know it is essential to focus in, and if you have sleep issues, contact me. It gets better 99% of the time with people I work with.
6) Posture - Sit up straight, stand up tall. Keeping ahead of the game (see what I did there) will put you in good stead (yes, I did it again) to feel good years into the future. Obviously, this is boosted with the proper exercise and mobility weaved into your weeks.
7) Smiling - Even if you don't feel like it. Sometimes a forced smile can help break a bad mood. Not always, but sometimes. Every day is definitely not a proverbial box of chocolates, but making the most of whatever we have is a skill. It is a work in progress here, but progression, not perfection is one of my mantras, so keep looking forward.
What would you add that is free to do?
One of the best things is you can do 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 simultaneously, more or less.
Even add in a break for 4.
Some people do 3 and 5 together. Just be careful. 😉
What would you add?
Any you are missing out on?

7 Reasons to Exercise that are not Weight Loss
Yes, I know most people come to see someone like me for an external reason, like wanting to lose weight.
That is perfectly ok. It’s a pleasure to be able to help in that capacity.
When old clothes fit again, and the reflection in the mirror looks much more streamlined, it’s a great feeling.
However, the funny thing is that most of the hundreds of people I have worked with over the past decade-plus are often more pleased about other areas of their life.
✅️ They feel happier - in a better overall mood.
✅️ They live better - feeling more alive with fewer aches and pains.
✅️ They stay stronger - picking stuff up that they had thought was well out of reach years ago.
✅️ They sleep deeper - and feel more awake with more energy throughout the day
✅️ They think faster - exercise increases blood and nutrient flow to the brain.
✅️ They burden others less - the realisation that as they age, the healthier they are, the less strain they are on family and friends in the years ahead.
✅️ They inspire their children or grandchildren - depending on when they initially had children. Kids love to see their parents exercise and get involved.
Having more energy is a big one, time and time again.
Yes, ‘looking’ better is fantastic, but I would argue that feeling better trumps that upon reflection. (Naturally, the two are synergistic, though in many cases)

- Any Jack Butcher fans about? I am working on creating this. Thoughts?
- It's the simple things.
Do them consistently, and reap the benefits.
Anything you would add?
- Discipline equals freedom.
This great quote sums up success in any area of life.
It's the tortoise and the hare all over again.
We all know who won that race.
Being consistent and doing the stuff that can be boring at times yields the best returns over time.
This is especially true when it comes to reaching health goals.
Temptation surrounds us; if you are smart, you can have your cake and eat it. But not every single day.
Getting the balance is the key, and then when you have the cake, beer, or whatever you enjoy, it tastes that much better.
If you are not quite 'there' in your health and body goals, think a little about where you can apply more discipline.
If you need direction, a proven system and some accountability, then I can help with this, or there may be someone else you gravitate towards.
Whatever you decide, time flies. If you want 2023 to be the year that things turn around, do something about it.
Don't stop moving.
Tom (@SmartHealth365)
- A few of the things I'll do when feeling run down.
Back off training.
Focus on eating whole foods.
Lots of high quality water.
High dose Vitamin C.
Up multi-vitamins and antioxidants.
Rest.
Try and do some breath work and light mobility.
Reduce sugar right down.
What are your go-to tactics to recover faster?
- Introducing Bonsai, an Optimistic L3 scaling solution, that will process transactions at hyper-scale, and is designed to support the next generation of web3 social users.
Available for Lens devs in closed beta today.
Data availability layers are utilized to prevent storing information on-chain. While content on Lens may include an on-chain transaction, the content data is linked to a data availability location, like Bonsai.
Bonsai serves as a scaling solution that processes Polygon transactions off-chain, achieving hyperscale and reducing costs. Unlike L2 solutions, Bonsai doesn't compress transactions into L1, it sends and stores them on a data availability layer.
The main challenge for decentralized social networks is to ensure that users have control over their content, while still being just as user-friendly as traditional social networks.
Bonsai makes the future of decentralized social possible.
We've worked relentlessly with the @bundlr-network.lens work and Arweave teams to ensure scalability by providing Data Availability (DA) guarantees, allowing the use of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-supported wallets to save DA logic and facilitating the rapid publishing of data.
Permissionless innovation is at the core of everything we do on Lens. As we approach one year on mainnet (still in beta), we have been blown away by the talent and passion in our dev community but we realize in order to scale to the masses, we need to build new solutions.
Bonsai is currently only being beta tested on @lensterxyz.
We look forward to seeing more applications roll out Bonsai.

After a great post from @wagmi.lens about feeling good being back in the gym I was inspired by @punkess.lens call out for a community on Lens for fitness. I'd love to have positive fitness vibes as a part of the Lens world, I can see it being of benefit to many of us seeking a healthy balance and a helpful connection between our digital and physical lives.

- @wagmi.lens @iamtheyakuza.lens this was this morning’s 6am workout
Force work.
5 rounds of 4 reps of 80kg front squats.
Conditioning work.
Attempted 3 rounds of
Minute 1 - 21 Thrusters @ 35kg
Minute 2 - 21 Calories on the rower
Minute 3 - 21 Pull ups
Minute 4 - Rest
Averaged these numbers over the 3 rounds.
15 Thrusters
14 Calories
12 Pull Ups
Pretty sure that workout was impossible. 😅
- Protein
Pro Tip to Get Lean this Summer ⬇️
Often missed and essential!
Protein is a Greek word that literally means “of prime importance.”
It's the foundation to every human body, required by every cell in the body, and is an important building block for muscles, bones, blood, and cartilage.
Miss this macronutrient at your peril.
From my experience, the vast majority of people are doing just that.
Protein is ‘the’ macro you need to focus on first to get leaner and to build muscle.
We are conditioned to have lots of carbs from early age.
Cereals, breads, pasta, rice, snacks, sweets, juices, etc
To get something different, you have to do something different.
Look to eat 1.5g of protein per kilo of the desired bodyweight!
So if you want to be 80 kg one day, eat to your goals.
80 (kg) x 1.5 = 135 grams of protein per day spread across as many meals as you want.
2 - 3 meals are probably the easiest. Add a good protein shake to help things out.
It could be a game-changer.
Add lots of greens to the mix, too like peas, broccoli, spinach, and cabbage, which are great for digestion and help the body with the extra protein.
Summer is coming.

- Master Your Energy Levels and Eliminate Afternoon Exhaustion with This Game-Changing Trick
Coffee Drinkers read on ⬇️⬇️
Warning - this may take a little morning willpower but it will be worth it!
One of the first things many coffee lovers do after they get up is to turn on the coffee pot.
However, research shows to wait 90 minutes from waking before having caffeine.
Here is why;
Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman suggests waiting 90 minutes before drinking coffee in the morning for better energy levels and overall well-being.
Consuming caffeine during the natural cortisol spike that occurs after waking up can diminish the effects of both cortisol and caffeine.
Waiting 90 minutes allows adenosine levels to rise slightly, making caffeine more effective at blocking the receptors and keeping you alert.
Additionally, drinking coffee immediately after waking can disrupt the natural cortisol rhythm and potentially lead to poor sleep quality.
By waiting 90 minutes, you preserve your natural cortisol pattern, promoting better sleep and wakefulness.
Lastly, waiting 90 minutes can reduce caffeine dependency by allowing your body to rely more on its natural mechanisms for wakefulness.
Try waiting 90 minutes after waking up to experience better energy levels, improved sleep quality, and a healthier relationship with caffeine.
It’s not easy to do, but worth the effort!

- 📚 **Fun fact about posts on #Lens!**
They can be hosted on either centralized or decentralized resources.
Decentralized ones cannot be deleted. A better name for the "Delete" button (@lenster.lens) in this case would be "Hide" because, technically, it is more accurate. Such a post can still be viewed even after deletion.
On the other side, centralized ones can be deleted if you or anyone else can access the centralized host. Or better, if a post owner can delete it, he can also change the content. So, when you see a post, you can only be sure that the content will stay the same once you know whether it is centralized or not (better not to believe in bet predictions on Lens, right?).
And since comments are technically still posts (but with a reference), we can edit them as well and make some dirty game. In general, there will be no edit tracks unless the comment's content has been uploaded to some sort of archive.
That was my first thought, but then I dug a little deeper. The trick won't work with the default Lens indexer that everyone uses nowadays because it indexes posts only once after transaction confirmation on #Polygon. So, basically, it copies your post to the indexer's DB, and later, when you use Lenster or some other client, you don't get the data from the actual post's content URL but from this DB.
I wondered why it works like that because this means the indexer's DB won't represent the actual state of the blockchain in some cases. I've written in the Lens Discord, and the answers were as follows:
https://discord.com/channels/918178320682733648/1080136391989669989/1080230235854864446
@cesare.lens: "To be clear the blockchain data is not changed, on-chain each post|comment has a content URI that cannot be changed. The contentURI has to point to a public location. From an immutability perspective a "purist" would argue to use an immutable data storage (e.g. IPFS) still the Lens Protocol does not stop you to use a URL you control. The indexer is driven primarily by on-chain events to determine what and when to fetch contentURI. Updating the file won't cause a chain event so simply updating the file won't work."
@wagmi.lens: "We will add a refresh endpoint soon it's on the radar"

- No time to work out?
This is all so much more than you.
Your children look up to you and subconsciously will want to emulate what you do, if you like it or not.
What you do now echoes in eternity.
A great quote, that one, isn't it. I wish I had come up with it.
Look after your health; the kids are more likely to do the same. You create a legacy.
Plus, if you look after your health, you will be less burden on them one day.
We all have choices.
Schedule your workouts and stick to them as non-negotiable.
Find time for yourself, it pays off in so many ways.

- Summer's coming, and it's the perfect time to get in shape for the holidays!
You know that taking care of your body is essential for staying healthy and feeling at your best.
But with work, family, and other responsibilities, it can be challenging to find the time and motivation to exercise regularly and eat well.
However, with the promise of summer fun and relaxation just around the corner, now is the perfect time to get back into shape and feel good about yourself.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
1) Make the decision: The first step to getting in shape is to draw the line in the sand and commit to taking action. Simple as that, now is the time. No more ‘soon’, and waiting for the perfect situation.
2) Make exercise a habit: A key to getting in shape is consistency. Make exercise a habit by scheduling it into your day and sticking to it. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a priority. Whether it's walking, jogging, swimming, or taking a fitness class, weights find something that gets your heart rate up and that you enjoy.
3) Eat a healthy diet: Exercise alone won't get you in shape if you're not eating a healthy diet. Focus on whole foods 90% of the time! Lean protein, vegetables, whole grains, some fruits and healthy fats. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive alcohol consumption. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
4) Get enough rest: Getting enough rest is essential for recovery and overall health. Make sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night and take rest days from exercise when needed. Overtraining can lead to injury and burnout, so listen to your body and give it the rest it needs.
5) Focus on feeling good: Getting in shape isn't just about looking good, it's about feeling good too. Exercise and healthy eating can boost your mood, increase your energy levels, and reduce stress. Focus on how good you feel after a workout or eating a healthy meal, and let that motivate you to keep going.
Getting in shape for summer can be an emotional journey as well. It's normal to feel self-conscious or insecure about your body, especially as you get older.
But remember that you're doing this for yourself, not for anyone else. You deserve to feel good in your own skin, and getting in shape can help you achieve that.
As you work towards your goals, remember to celebrate your progress and be kind to yourself.
Getting in shape is a journey, not a destination, and it's important to enjoy the process along the way.
Take photos, track your progress, and give yourself credit for the hard work you're putting in.
In conclusion, getting in shape for summer is an excellent goal.
It can help you feel better physically and emotionally and give you the confidence you need to enjoy your holiday fully. Looking forward to some holiday pictures for a change.
Let’s face it, once you are feeling and looking better you’ll want to keep this way for years to come.
So get into action mode, make exercise a habit, eat a healthy diet, get enough rest, and focus on feeling good.
With a little dedication and persistence, you can make it happen.
Don't stop moving!
