The central white structure and black granite altar stand in the middle of a “field of stones”: around five thousand rough granite markers of different sizes and colors, arranged like a symbolic cemetery to represent the many communities and individuals who were killed. Between 1941 and 1944 this quiet pine forest became one of Latvia’s largest killing sites, where tens of thousands of Jews from Latvia and other European countries, as well as Soviet prisoners of war and political prisoners, were shot and buried in mass graves scattered among the trees. Today paths lead visitors past those grave mounds and through the stone field, while plaques bearing the names of towns and cities remind you that the victims came from all over Europe, turning the forest into a place of shared European memory rather than just a local site.
