I am just wondering if they will still be necessary in the future. If ethereum has sharding the L2s may become obsolete and I wouldn’t want NFTs stuck on a L2 which isn’t maintained anymore.

I think it can get to the point where there are too many. And it can be hard to bridge between them, or have liquidity between them. And there is the chance one of them may fail, and your assets might be stuck. I know that there are ways to get ETH out, but what about NFTs that have been developed / upgraded on the l2?
