I don’t think an audio only post is something I want.
While sure if you paywall it that’s cool I suppose.
But as an artist I want people to hear my mus

- I hear that. I should be clear that my angle is that these audio-only posts would be collectable, allowing the artist to potentially make a profit. This was one of the features that drew me to Lens.
I’ve thought about the paywall idea. For instance, when open actions were announced, I thought maybe a “pay to play” button could be added to an audio post (similar to a “pay to read” button). I bounced the idea around, but it didn’t seem to be popular! 😆
Sure, we should take what works from web2 DSPs and make use of it (no need to completely reinvent the wheel). I just think that if you have a more direct line to your listeners/ collectors/ fans and can make the equivalent amount of money - but without the middleman - it seems that a web3 music platform would be the better option.
You make a really good point about having access to metrics on listener engagement tho. There is a huge gap in web3 platforms when it comes to collector data. I’d love to see an app that tracks the amount of times a media file in a tokenURI has been played, the platform it streamed from, wallet address of the user, date, time, etc. This would be extremely useful data for web3 musicians.
Last thing… you mentioned in a post recently that music in web3 is under utilizing the tech we have at our disposal. And in a related post you mentioned a need for a database/ archive for PROs to pull data from. So to piggyback off this idea, wouldn’t it be useful for web3 music platforms to utilize smart contract and media file metadata to build the infrastructure for such a database?
Mastering engineers spend a lot of time embedding metadata into master audio files. So there is already a standard for metadata tagging in the music industry. Imagine a 1-1 pairing of smart contract metadata that would read the embedded tags of an audio file, and populate an index with this data. That would be the start of a decentralized music library that could eventually be used by PROs, placement agencies, copyright offices, etc. It would just require consensus amongst industry orgs.
I might be getting ahead of myself - I’m not a developer, so this could make absolutely no sense! 😂 But if it does, I hope some dev steals my idea and makes this happen.
