the price of skiing/snowboarding has exploded out of control. after your bank is broken & you punch your $ 200 lift ticket you still have to avoid mayhem on the hill. people everywhere. sitting. standing. sliding. drunken torpedoes straight off the sun deck fiesta. on top of this, instead of limiting lift ticket sales the resorts are putting in higher speed lifts to accommodate even more bodies. a recent report shows that the price of lift tickets is not congruent with inflation but in fact much steeper, which begs the question: what’s the goal? price out the poor? keep it a country club sport? undiversify? this is why i spend my time in the backcountry these days. solitude. serenity. snowboarding with the squad. you won’t see this many people over the course of multiple days. it really is almost an entirely different activity.
