📍Kyoto, Japan 🇯🇵 The former imperial capital, the heart of Japan, is so different today because it was almost the only city that wasn’t leveled during World War II. It was “preserved” for the end, as the symbol of Japan, but thankfully, Hiroshima and Nagasaki took the heaviest blows, allowing Kyoto to embody the authentic Japanese tradition. Before and after World War II, Japan was like two different worlds. We spent a rainy afternoon in Kyoto’s center, a district called Gion. Gion is the only place in Japan where you can still encounter geishas. Thanks to the Western world, primarily America, geishas have been wrongly characterized and often compared to prostitutes. However, geishas are actually actresses, performers, women who have been preparing for this profession since childhood. They take great care of their physical cleanliness and appearance, recognizable by their white powder and heavy makeup. Unfortunately, we didn’t meet them this time as it seems they don’t like the rain either. The street we strolled through is called Hanamikoji, and it was the setting for the film “Memoirs of a Geisha.” Within the wooden and bamboo houses, you can find restaurants, hotels, and shops without any clear signage that is understandable to us. We also visited the vibrant Yasaka-jinja Shrine, which is significant because it marks the starting point of one of the most famous Japanese festivals, “Gion Matsuri,” held every July as a symbol of gratitude to the Gods who protect the city. When night falls, Kyoto becomes a whole new story.
