I’d moved out to LA from NYC a few months prior to this music festival that I really wanted to go to and didn’t know anyone going, so I decided to go solo. I’ve traveled solo internationally, so why not do it for a festival? Could I be my own best friend IRL and not only in the escapism of travel?
“You’re so brave,” some people would say. Is bravery simply being with oneself and facing fears and insecurities?
I went where I wanted, when I wanted. Made friends. Got invited backstage every night and onstage even 💎
What’s more, I’d stopped drinking before the fest. There aren’t that many people in the dance music scene who don’t drink, but I learned a few of the mainstage DJs who were playing don’t.
FYI, some musicians who don’t drink are: Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, JLo, Jennifer Hudson, Calvin Harris, Vince Staples, and more. It’s cool to have role models around this lifestyle in the scene.
El Monk and I met on a party trolley after a set that he DJed. We made friends and decided to collaborate on Future Self. I gave him the stems and this is what he created
