- I thought I’d share some insights on how I prepare music files to publish on Lens, and related thoughts on metadata, etc…
Many music artists don’t look too deeply into how digital files are created at the mastering stage. Obviously there is the sonic process; making sure our music sounds great on different systems in preparation for replication and distribution.
But mastering engineers also encode your digital files with all kinds of metadata. Ever wonder how the name and title are displayed on a digital system when you play a song?
For the past year, I’ve been using a software called Mp3tag to encode my music files before uploading to Lens. I include the cover art, song title, artist name, song length, BPM, mood, genre, lyrics, ISRC code, and other useful information. If you download any of my music files, you’ll be able to see the information in a metadata viewer.
So how can we use this metadata onchain? I’ve often wished that web3 apps could find a way to scrape metadata from a music file and use the information to auto-populate contracts and marketplace listings. Imagine if music-related dApps could instantly display information about the recording, or allow metadata to fill out required fields (like track and artist name, cover art) when uploading. I think that @lens/orb used to do this at some point.
Going one step further, I’d love to see music metadata become widely available on marketplace NFT listings. Imagine something similar to what we might find inside an album sleeve or CD booklet! Eventually this could enable us to build a large catalog of credits for onchain music. That data could be used to create search engines, tools for music discovery, and give musicians in web3 much more reach.
