- Personal life
Hetfield was married to Francesca Tomasi from August 17, 1997 to August 13, 2022. They had three children, Kaylee (June 13, 1998), Castor (May 18, 2000), and Marcella (January 17, 2002).
In his free time, James enjoys hunting, collecting rare guitars, raising bees, skateboarding, snowboarding, water skiing, working in his garage, following games of his favorite teams Oakland Raiders, San Jose Sharks and attending hot rod races.
He put his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro for sale on eBay. The proceeds went to support the school's music program. The car was used in the music video for the song "I Disappear" and was given to him as a gift after filming ended. And a fan from Orenburg collected a 1963 model K 750 motorcycle for James. Since then it has been in the musician's collection.
- Vocal Cord Issues
After recording the album St. Anger in 2003, James suffered a serious injury to his vocal cords. Due to the fact that this album used a lower tuning, Dropped C, compared to the standard, James had to sing much higher than his usual range, which led to voice problems, as his singing voice is a baritone. Gradually, his voice returned to him, which can be heard by comparing the more recent live recordings to the ones from the St. Anger era. A similar situation occurred in 1991 when Hetfield lost his voice during the recording of The Black Album, when they were recording the song "So What!". At that time, the band had to tune their guitars a half-step lower on the live shows, to make it easier for James to sing.
On February 5, 2017, Metallica was supposed to perform in Copenhagen, but James lost his voice the day before due to the flu, as a result the concert was canceled. The three remaining concerts of the WorldWired tour (on February 3, 7 and 9 in Copenhagen) remained on the schedule. The concert planned for February 5 was rescheduled to September 2.
- Alcohol Rehabilitation
During the recording of the album St. Anger, James Hetfield decided to undergo a rehabilitation course for alcoholism. The musician reduced his participation in the recording process and returned to the studio to complete the album eleven months after the course. James appeared in public in 2003 when Metallica was nominated as the "MTV Icon" of the year. In 2019, he underwent a rehabilitation course for alcoholism again.

- Accidents
James Hetfield is renowned for the accidents that have occurred to him. During the tour supporting the album Master Of Puppets, he broke his arm while skateboarding. At that time, James was replaced by John Marshall, the group's accompanying technician. Later, in 1987, he broke his arm again, resulting in the postponement of the recording of the album ...And Justice for All, and the cancellation of several shows on the upcoming Monsters of Rock'87 tour. Subsequently, a clause "No skateboards" was added to James' contracts.
However, perhaps the most well-known incident was at a joint concert with Guns N' Roses in 1992 at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. During the performance of the song "Fade to Black," Hetfield walked over the pyrotechnic equipment just as it was activated. As a result, James suffered second and third-degree burns on his left hand and face and was forced to stop playing the guitar. For the remainder of the tour, John Marshall from Metal Church was invited back as the rhythm guitarist. Prior to the concert, the pyrotechnicians had informed the band that new special effects, including fireworks on the edges of the stage, would be used during "Fade to Black." However, they forgot to mention that the old special effects would also remain in place. Believing that the previously announced special effects would not be used, James stood next to the pyrotechnic setup, and a 4-meter-high flame column burnt him on his left side.
Additionally, in 1994, James was involved in an incident with an all-terrain vehicle, resulting in 40 stitches on his head. This led him to wear a mullet hairstyle, which he eventually abandoned.
- Musical Career.
James started playing music at the age of 9 on the piano, then played the drums of his brother Dave, and finally moved to the guitar. His first band was the amateur group "Obsession". The band consisted of the Veloz brothers, who played bass guitar and drums, and Jim Arnold on guitar. Ron McGovney and Dave Marrs sat in the attic of the Veloz garage and clicked on the lighting effects control panel. The group played well-known compositions of such bands as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. After the breakup of Obsession, Marrs, Hetfield, and McGovney continued to play together.
After moving to La Brea, James enrolled at Brea Olinda School and met drummer Jim Mulligan. Soon Hugh Tanner appeared, and with him they created Phantom Lord. With Hugh on lead guitar and Jim on drums, James sang and played rhythm guitar. The band changed several bassists before James graduated from school and returned to Downey.
In Downey, James moved into a house owned by Ron McGovney's parents, which was to be demolished due to the expansion of the highway. This house was the perfect place for James and Ron to gather together, listen and play music. James persuaded Ron to play bass guitar and even promised to teach him.
James' third band, Leather Charm, consisted of former members of Phantom Lord. In addition to James and Ron, it included Hugh Tanner and Jim Mulligan. The Leather Charm band was more successful. It played its own songs and covers, such as Quiet Riot's Slick Black Cadillac and Iron Maiden's Remember Tomorrow. The band managed to perform at several concerts and recorded a demo, but began to fall apart. Tanner was the first to leave the band, and he was replaced by Troy James. Then Mulligan left for another, more progressive band. Ultimately, the Leather Charm band fell apart.
The most important event in James' life was meeting the drummer Lars Ulrich, who was from Denmark. Together they founded the band Metallica. At first, James decided to give up playing guitar and only sing, but after a while he began to play rhythm guitar parts, as well as solo parts in certain songs.
Annihilator guitarist Jeff Waters called Hetfield the "king of the downstroke" for his right-hand playing speed.
- James' father, Virgil, a bus driver who left the family when James was 13, and his mother, Cynthia, an opera singer, were followers of the Christian Science religious movement of Mary Baker Eddy, and according to James, a significant part of his youth was connected to Christianity.
In accordance with their beliefs, Hetfield's parents did not approve of medicine and any form of medical intervention, and they did not deviate from their faith, even when Cynthia was dying of cancer (James was 16 years old at the time). As James himself recounted, he did not have any problems at school initially, but when the medical lessons began, he would leave those classes. He started to distance himself from everyone when he noticed whispering behind his back. Therefore, he became an introvert. According to the recollections of Ron McGovney, his classmate and former Metallica bandmate, James spoke very little. He would just say "Hello," pick up a guitar, and start playing something.
The death of his mother and his complex relationship with religion later became the main themes of many Metallica songs.
- James Alan Hetfield is an American rock musician; the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the metal band Metallica. Since 2011, he has been ranked 87th in the list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. A distinctive feature of his playing style is the predominance of downstrokes, even in the fastest passages, and his use of a three-finger grip on the pick (plectrum).
