- Arbitrum Governance Update 🏛️
There's a proposal to distribute up to 75,000,000 ARB in incentives for Arbitrum protocols in the span of 4 months.
I just voted to support the distribution of up to 50M ARB through Jan 31 2024.
Some thoughts on the proposal below: 👇
0️⃣ Summary of the proposal
The objective of this proposal is to facilitate the distribution of ARB to protocols as incentives, so they are ultimately put to use with the final objective of supporting network growth.
For this, protocols must follow a set of guidelines to request for a grant that falls into the appropriate bracket according to, amongst other things, their TVL.
There is a (rather short) timeline for protocols to apply, for delegates and community to submit feedback, and finally for the DAO to vote yes or no to that specific request within the parameters of this proposed structure.
The whole mechanics and proposed process can be seen on the forum posts, comments, and grant template.
This structure proposes to distribute either 75M, 50M, or 25M starting now on September until January 31 2024 to all protocols that apply and pass their voting.
🔗 Whole proposal discussion: https://forum.arbitrum.foundation/t/arbitrums-short-term-incentive-program-arbitrum-improvement-proposal/16131
🔗 Snapshot vote (ending Sep 18): https://snapshot.org/#/arbitrumfoundation.eth/proposal/0x5e0057920df9a278918e4de4ee1e6de7e2415d2af985e40a6c7a1a4b47a4ce01
🔗 Grant application template: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OwXWc59IWuMH93qD_RVq3oOo4wQOqroyKPBYs1aXgdY/edit
This is a good initiative. I have voted in favour of incentives for this temperature check (order: 50M, 25M, 75M, A). I believe in the positive impact of incentives for the ecosystem and though the structure proposed can probably be enhanced, given the short-term objective and the points made to be getting things started I think this is a good compromise.
1️⃣ Amounts, Timeframe, Awareness.
The extension of the programme until Jan 31st is a positive change for potential new grantees to come to know about this and apply. It could be a good idea to leverage Arbitrum’s official social media channels for discovery. Not sure if this is something the Foundation can help with.
Considering all possible Pinnacle bracket protocols (only 12 according to Defillama) which are the ones that could request the larger allocations, 50M in the proposed timespan until Jan 31st looks reasonable as a first iteration or until further initiatives come to place.
It would have been ideal to set a maximum cap on how much ARB protocols can request. Maybe for the on-chain voting? In any case and since the DAO will be reviewing grant applications individually, I don’t view this as a major issue.
Reposting the document already shared by AXL Seed Latam to another data input for the Optimism L2, on amounts and timeframes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eaHOlWB34ij1KGsXdaNyTQg4tt1Pu2JurJsElBb6a8k/edit
2️⃣ Accountability, reporting, and milestones.
Streaming funds and tranches is a great idea.
Before the on-chain vote, how would the DAO feel about the suggestion that protocols that receive grants post a bi-weekly report with results and progress instead of just one Dune Dashboard at Dec 15?
Also, where will these be made available, a forum post? Is there a template? I saw Section 6 of the Application Template but it does not detail exactly how are protocols to move forward in this regard once a they receive a grant.
Might it be a good idea that Tnorm (proposal drafter) take on the (of course - paid) responsibility of organizing and controlling the data reporting and execution, for the DAO to later process and read? Could this come out of the Operational Budget, or is this destined to something else?
3️⃣ Compensation for the Working Group.
The 20,000 ARB compensation for Tnorm looks fair to me. It’s true that if we break it down to $/hour and compare it to similar demanding jobs it could or could not be overpriced, however for prices to go down there needs to be competition in the DAO services market offer. Until that happens, I am glad that there is people that do offer their services and time, as long as it’s not an unreasonable ask.
4️⃣ Difficulty for proper due-diligence upon flood of applications.
I am echoing concerns by some delegates about this matter, and it will ultimately come down to the whole delegate community to revise and research to the best of their abilities. I am looking forward to seeing how this first attempt turns out, keeping in mind that adjusting/voting policies in real time is also acceptable.
5️⃣ Awareness
Also, let this also serve as awareness for Arbitrum protocols or projects that might not have noticed this discussion going on. Take a look at the whole forum proposal (and its amendments) and be ready to apply if interested.
In summary, I voted to support the funding of this grants programme. Hopefully we can keep improving the mechanics of this proposal before on-chain voting.

- Another way to implement Zero-Knowledge Proofs in the space: **ZK Badges** 🎭
In a post, Vitalik talked about @Sismo_eth, a protocol that issues ZK Badges.
They are privacy-preserving Soul-Bound Tokens (non-transferrable NFTs).
SISMO does not have a token. How does it work? 🧵
1/
What is Sismo?
It's a protocol that allows people to issue and mint ZK Badges.
What is a Zero Knowledge Badge?
It's a Soul-Bound Token (non-transferable NFT) that can provide evidence of something without revealing the actual information.
Example 👇
2/
Example:
Say I want to prove to all of you that I received a $100,000 DYDX airdrop without revealing the wallet that received it.
I could "earn" the badge using that wallet (private) but "mint" the badge using my olimpio.eth wallet (public)
Thanks @dhadrien_ for slides ⚡️
3/
Another example:
Remember Proof of Humanity? A website where you upload a selfie video of yourself holding a piece of paper with your wallet.
Well, I could now do that with my private wallet, and mint a "human-verified" Sismo badge with olimpio.eth without linking wallets.
4/
What can we do with Sismo right now?
We can mint a badge that someone already created.
Or, we can create our own badges as well for others to mint. Some ideas come to mind, stay tuned 👀
5/
How to check if you are already eligible to mint an existing badge?
• Mint Badges vetted by the team: 🔗 app.sismo.io
• Mint Badges created by anyone in web3: 🔗 playground.sismo.io
Log in, launch your vault, and check your eligibility.
6/
Recently, Sismo has started a cooperation with @aztecnetwork, a privacy layer for web3.
If you deposited to Aztec at least 3 times, you can mint a badge here (gives you a DC role):
🔗 playground.sismo.io/aztec-connect-depositors
BTW, here is more Aztec alpha👇: twitter.com/OlimpioCrypto/status/1609259055075463169
7/
$SISMO token or airdrop? 🪂
No token was confirmed, yet. No airdrop was confirmed. We are speculating here!
Investors:
They did not release any official communication about this, but they had an angel round with VCs like Framework, Seedclub, Delphi and IDEO
8/
💡 Vitalik mentioned Sismo in one of his blog posts.
vitalik.eth.limo/general/2022/12/05/excited.html
He did the same thing with ENS when it wasn't a big thing.
"Sismo is [at] an early start"
Might be a good idea to take a look
