- The Devcon Experience
by Nico Gallardo
Foreword: The Devcon Experience is a short-story that gives a quick look into what the biggest Ethereum conference is, inspired by a Latin American literary movement called Magic Realism. Magic Realism paints a realistic view while also adding magical elements, often blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Check profile for Spanish version.
---o---
Diego woke up sweating, with tears in his eyes, and a strange feeling of hopelessness. It was strange because his first job interview the day before had gone incredibly well, and he was excited about receiving an answer soon. Although he could vaguely remember his nightmare, he still had the sensation of being trapped and immobilized. Someone had pushed him into quicksand, and around him he saw his friends and many other people jumping in at the command of faceless people despite his screams of warning. The only thing he could clearly remember was a bunch of coloured leaves floating. They came from a figure that had been pushing its way through the faceless people that tried to grab it.
He shook it off, and got ready to go out. He had agreed to meet his friend who wanted to share an exciting update with him. On his way out, his father was watching the news: the markets were crashing. “Do you still have some of those Bitcoins? I hope you get that job soon, so you get to appreciate the value of real money. Your “experiments” keep making you losses. You should talk to those kids I teach in school, they seem to have a better understanding of money than you”. Diego had tried to learn to do trading months ago, but failed at it and stopped. So, he ignored the comment, and said bye.
Sofia, his friend, was waiting with a huge smile. “I’m going to Devcon! You should come with me.” she said, showing him a necklace with coloured leaves hanging from it. “Devcon? I told you I’m not dressing up as any of your stupid Chinese characters again. Don’t you remember what happened last time?”. Diego blushed. “It’s Devcon! Weren’t you also into crypto?” she asked. Diego had never heard about Devcon before. “Are you still into that? I thought you had dropped it… Like everything you do…” Sofia laughed “I‘m not trading anymore. But, I actually ended up joining a lot of cool communities in Web3 and stuck around. There’s even one for 3D-artists, and they’re really making some buck with their skills! I can connect you to them, they’ll be at Devcon.” Diego looked at her skeptically. “Sounds cool, but my dad would kill me if I spent more time with that. Also, I had a great job interview at the Rural Development Bank the other day, so I cannot really get distracted. What is Devcon anyways?”
“Well, it’s an Ethereum conference. But I heard it’s actually much cooler than just a conference. Some people even compared it to a festival. Aside from all the smart people giving talks, apparently there are many cool parties, giveaways and other stuff... They even organize hackathons!” Diego stayed quiet. He had always wanted to participate at a hackathon, but as he didn’t know how to code he never did. “That doesn’t seem like something for me. I cannot keep getting distracted”. Sofia closed her eyes and shook her head in disappointment. “You’re gonna get in the rat race soon, do something fun with me one last time. Look, there’s a hackathon before Devcon. Let’s participate and if you like the vibe, then I’ll try to get you a ticket.”
“All right” he said, he always felt bad when he let Sofia down. “Anyways, this could be a good way to say goodbye to playing around with my 3D art”, he thought.
——
“And the last finalist: ReFi-3D!” Diego, Sofia and the rest of the team screamed of joy and hugged. They couldn’t believe it. It was their first hackathon, had only one experienced developer and still won a big prize. He would’ve never thought that something he started as a hobby would ever pay him a single dollar, but he had just been proven wrong. He immediately regreted spending time trying to learn trading, instead of improving his other skills. One of his team-members had come knowing nothing about coding and in just a few hours she had already earned more than Diego had ever made. Plus, she received the interest of a few organizations to keep developing her skills. “So, are you coming with me next week?” Sofia asked. Diego was extremely exhausted, but felt extremely energised at the same time. “I’ll let you know tomorrow” he said.
——
“Congratulations!!” heard Diego as soon as he opened the door of his house. “How did they know I won the hackathon?” he thought. “I’m proud of you, son. This came in yesterday.” His father handed him a letter.
We were very impressed by your skills, and are very happy to invite you to join the team. You are expected on Tuesday at 9am in our office for your trial week.
“Woo-hoo!” he screamed with joy. But then, he realised he will have to miss Devcon and felt a bit sad. He had already planned a few talks he wanted to attend and was making a schedule for all the side-events he wanted to explore. At least he could support Sofia at ETHLatam on Monday, an event organised to promote Ethereum in Latinamerica where she had an active role. They also wanted to hear some talks at Schelling Point from people that inspired their hackathon project. The entire idea of an event with the goal to imagine a future where all social and environmental challenges had been overcome really inspired him. So he would at least catch those same speakers who were gonna give talks at Devcon there.
——
At ETHLatam, Diego met a lot of people in the same situation as him. Many of them were beginners, who seemed to have gone as far as him in his crypto journey. However, the event offered him a new look on Web3 and some of the basic concepts to go a bit deeper. Diego understood why they had chosen a place in Latinamerica to have such a conference. The relevance of this technology in the continent made him feel that he was just in the right place at the right time and inspired him to join more local communities to support the ecosystem, even if it was just in his little free time.
Schelling Point was fantastic. They had never expected a crypto event to have such a positive drive towards improving society, the environment and the world. Sofía wasin her element. Diego learned a lot about Regenerative Finance, Decentralized Science and how Web3 is doing a better job with Public Goods than any other (public) organisation before. They found out about a lot of ways to get support for projects, like grants and a thing called “Quadratic Funding”, with which many truly impactful projects had started. Diego immediately thought that his dad’s project to help with education and job opportunities for kids in rural areas could really benefit from this as well.
After the main event he enjoyed a very cool after-party with some exotic local drinks. When he looked at the clock it was almost midnight. “Damn, I need to find Sofia. I still need to tell her I won’t be able to join Devcon.” After looking around the entire venue, he heard someone calling his name. He was surprised to see the woman who gave the talk that inspired his project rushing towards him. “I love what you did at the hackathon! Please let me know how we can support you, we’d love you to continue working on it. Here is my contact.” Diego couldn’t believe it. He had so much to tell Sofía! Where was she?
The venue was almost empty, but no trace of Sofía. “Oh well, I guess she’ll find out tomorrow that I’m not coming” Diego thought. When he was on his way to the exit, he saw a few coloured leaves behind a blind. They immediately reminded him of the floating objects of the dream he had had the other night. He picked up one of the leaves and realised it looked the same as the ones in Sofia’s necklace. Could it be that he had dreamt about that necklace before? He thought he had seen it for the first time after his dream, but maybe he was wrong. He followed the trace, remotely thinking it would lead him to Sofia. At the end of the trail, he saw a paper. He picked it up and read “Devcon VI”. “A Devcon ticket?” he thought. The paper had a white unicorn mirrored on each side of a QR code. The unicorns also had a mane with rainbow leaves and a colourful tail. Was that the figure he saw in his dream? It couldn’t be. The whole situation seemed extremely odd to Diego. His grandma had always told him, that these kind of things don’t happen by coincidence, and that he should listen to the universe when it is trying to communicate with him. He decided to follow his intuition and call in sick for his trial week at the new job in order to attend Devcon. He had to tell Sofia what had just happened.
Diego tried reaching out to Sofia the next day, but she never picked up. Maybe she had set everything up to challenge him and see what he would do without her. It wouldn’t be the first time she did something like that. Diego decided to go to the conference by himself and attend the talks and workshops Sofia had planned. Maybe he would find her there, or at least he could share his findings with her when they met again.
——
Diego didn’t regret his decision. Not only was Devcon an amazing place to be at, with a lot of great local food for everyone and gifts from all the projects, but he also learned about all the different things being built within the Ethereum ecosystem. He found out about the interplay between all these projects and how they are bringing innovation to many different industries. He also learned that it’s relatively easy to make a living in Web3 if you are able to prove your skills. Either by contributing to a project, doing bounties for DAOs (a new way of forming organizations in Web3), receiving grants to develop a new project in the ecosystem or simply getting hired by one of them.
Devcon also offered a bunch of different flavours. The conference had different tracks for everyone: non-technical people, impact leaders, designers, community builders, economists, developers at all levels, and even those who went deep down the zero-knowledge realm. The most interesting part was that there were a lot of talks that highlighted the importance of this technology in Latinamerica and other developing countries. Diego, again, felt he was just in the right place. He felt the urge to discuss everything he had learnt with Sofia, but she was still missing. He also realised that now he had the tools to show his father how this technology could help his business.
Aside from all that, Diego was being taken care of extremely well at the conference. He received food regularly, could grab snacks and coffee all day, had access to dedicated places to work and relax (like a super cool hacker basement with amazing digital art, a lounge with live music almost all day and even a place to take naps!), and a lot of other cool games and activities. One day he even booked a tour to explore Bogotá from the venue, and got to know Latinamerican culture at the Chiva Chillout, a typical Colombian bus full of objects brought by the Ethereum communities from all over the continent.
But Devcon wasn’t only happening during the day. Although the talks ended at around 5pm, the venue was open until 11pm, for people to hang out and work at the hacker basement. Other than that, there were at least 3 other side-events and parties organized by web3 projects happening during the evening. He was very glad Sofia had planned everything beforehand.
——
There was a magical vibe at the closing ceremony. Everyone had a big smile in their faces. But it was not one of those grins of over-excitement, but rather a calm smile that breaded satisfaction. After the goodbye words, a "comparsa" of Colombian dancers from different ethnicities entered the room and lit up the place. Suddenly many different kinds of people entered the room, dancing, cheering, singing, playing instruments and jumping around. All of them wearing very colourful costumes of all kinds. Some of them were even riding small bycicles, were on stilts or were bouncing around in pogo-sticks.
Amongst all the people, Diego saw some colorfull leafs in the floor. "Sofía!" he thought. Following the trail, he glimpsed a beatuiful big figure with a colourful tail. He wasn't sure if it was a costume, or if the organisers had brought an actual animal to the venue. Nothing would've surprised him anymore after all the crazy things he experienced that week, so he decided to find out.
The doors slammed opened and the whole comparsa started leading the crowd through the exit doors. Diego tried to rush to the front to see the gorgeous creature. Suddenly, right when he crossed the threshold, he managed to see a beautiful white figure with a colourful mane of leaves for half a second before he got blinded by a beam of lights with many colours. A sort of fog limited his range of sight, but could see that those colourful leaves that reminded him of Sofia were raining all over the venue. When the fog dissipated, he found himself in a completely different place than the ceremonial hall. He was in the middle of an immense garden, populated by a lot of people. None of them seemed familiar, though. In fact, most of the people seemed to have very different cultural and economic backgrounds. Black and white, middle-class and poor, latino and arabic, monks and construction workers. He had never been in a place with so many different people, and he couldn’t see where this garden ended. However, he was sure of something: Despite the alien environment, he felt a very soothing sensation of connectedness. No matter how they looked, or who they were, they were all planting their seeds in that infinite garden.
