- Damascene Chenin Part 2:
This lil series follows my progress creating a character designed and Inspired by the Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc by @damascenevineyards
There is still a long way to go till this particular piece of art is complete, but I'm enjoying the progress so far and looking forward to seeing where it goes. I hope you get something out of it too. Make sure to have a listen to discover how the visuals and the wine tie together.
Have you tried this wine yet?

Wine and Music pairing. We are all super familiar in the wine world with the concept of pairing wine and food. After all they are both primarily experienced with the nose and mouth. However, they are not the only senses. How many times have you experienced a movie emotionally because of the music, or felt different about a moment based on how it literally felt to be there.
Well, today we are bringing two icons of Australia together. @thecatempire and Shiraz. In particular the Merri Sunbury Shiraz by the @hairyarmwineco 🍷🍾🐱
For me this pairing was perfect, the music actually sounds like a song about wine, the lyrics have depth and a lot of surprising emotional weight. And the wine was lovely, ripe and bouncy just like the music. 🎺
If you have any wine and music pairings please let me know what has worked for you. And if you would like any new songs explored, let's talk!
I hope you enjoy the content, and I look forward to starting my next piece where I plan to talk about wines in relation to some rather well known literature. Stay tuned.
- Japan Wine Region: A very mini guide!
I love the ability with wine to go exploring countries and cultures. There are many wine regions in the world that are barely known by the general public and that is a real shame. Japanese wine is a huge topic that deserves much more than a one minute video, but as a little start you can find some basic information here. Have you ever tried any Japanese wines?
- Vina Tondonia Reserva: 2007
As many wine geeks can attest, Vina Tondonia is one of those bucket list wines that you hope to try at some point. A Rioja with famously long ageing and even longer release schedules which means you get to taste something with many years on it almost as soon as it hits the market. 🍾
This wine spends 6 years in Barriques, and then is put into large wooden casks until about three years before it's release date when it is bottled. This gives the wine a huge amount of scope for secondary and tertiary flavours to develop before it's even hit the bottle. 🍷
Wine profile:
Despite those years this wine holds up its fruit flavours for all to see. With a dusty sour red cherry being the main component. 🍒
It then evolves on the nose and palate to incorporate some black tea flavours, sage, licorice, and a beautiful hint of fresh round and very smooth vanilla. 🫖🍦🌿
I was enjoying this wine with some roasted vegetables doused in a very creamy olive oil and I have to say, that pairing was 🔥
It creates this long delicious finish that can only be described as decadent.
If I was to pair this with anything else, I think weirdly it reminds me of forest gateaux. That kinda lush chocolate cake that comes chilled and is filled with berries of the forest. In that sense, go find a glade! Live a fairytale dream of being in a forest meadow surrounded by deer and birds that land on your shoulder. Sing songs, and drink this wine.
Pure heaven. Tasted @coolersomm in Wandsworth London.

- Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Touring Markos's Vineyard.
The ancient Greeks were excellent winemakers very early on, and I wanted to see if this was reflected in the game. As it turns out, it was really surprisingly accurate. The Greeks did stake up vines as you can see. They did have presses, and would have used different methods for different grapes and styles. (Skin contact, no skin contact) Etc. They were also prolific traders of wine using the amphoras to move it around and even sometimes age it. (Usually not for much more than a year or two).
Fun fact: they only ever drank wine diluted with water and considered people who didn't to be dangerously unhealthy and barbaric. Hahaha I wonder what they would think of us.
If you like this style of video and want to see more exploration of how wine is portrayed in popular media. Drop a like and a comment.

- The journey through Rhone Valley continues with this lush addition. The Vie Magne Crozes Hermitage - 2020: by @reminiero
Full of Rich Black Cherry flavours, black pepper, dark chocolate and hints of varnish, and clove, this was an absolute delight. I tend usually towards wines which have a good level of fruit backbone and this delivers in that respect, balanced perfectly as it is with some nice oak and secondary flavours as well.
Niero is a producer whose work I am really starting to admire. The wines I have tried so far have all been both great expressions of the terroir as well as being joyful and fresh. In the past I used to think all northern Rhone tasted like leather bookmarks, and this producer is one of a few who has dissuaded me of that opinion.
How would I pair this wine? The profile speaks to me of History, but in a fun easy to digest form. It weirdly reminds me of a show I used to love as a child called Time Team. It was a show where archeologists would have three days to discover a new site in the UK. It was nerdy, and very cute, but also a modern format and quick witted enough to be appealing to any age. I think I could quite happily pull up an old episode of Time Team, a glass of this rich Crozes Hermitage wine, and go nerd out.

- Earth Day 2024: Beyond Empathy
It's easy to get swept up in the feel-good messages of Earth Day, and personally I love it. But what if those messages don't resonate deeply with you? What's the point of caring about recycling, clean oceans, or endangered species, anyway?
Last night I read something that is pertinent to this question of caring and I want to share it.
So here we go...
Nothing is alive. 😱
Here's a perspective shift: nothing is truly alive in isolation. Cells, viruses, even us – we're all inert without interaction. Life isn't something a single object possesses; it's the dazzling dance of countless interconnected pieces. Even in death, that dance continues, just without the personality we recognize as a "self."
This realization shatters the illusion of separation. Our very sense of being, of aliveness, arises from a vast web of relationships that without - nothing, including the sensation of being alive, could exist. We are not islands, but intricate threads within a cosmic tapestry.
So, this Earth Day, let's go beyond surface-level empathy. When you truly grasp this interconnectedness, the Earth, the universe... they become akin to your own body. Caring for them isn't a moral obligation, it's an act of self-preservation. To harm the planet is to harm ourselves, for we are woven from the same vibrant, interdependent fabric.

- Sometimes I feel absolutely blessed to be working in the job that I am. I feel a sense of growth, ownership of my work, a great feeling of balance, and it satisfies. But on days when you get to try wines like this as part of the job... That feeling of gratitude is tenfold.
This is the Domaine de la Mordorée: La Reine des Bois Chateauneuf-du-pape 2016. By all accounts this has a few times been given the accolade of being a 100 point wine from various critics and experts. As such, this makes it the first 100 point wine I have ever tried.
To say my eyes lit up in understanding is an understatement. I was positively taken aback by this wine.
I've had many delicious, well balanced, structured wines that were infinitely drinkable but this is on another level. It had pronounced fruit intensity of Blackberries, Plum, Blueberry. Followed by spices and interesting side shows of All spice, Vanilla, Black pepper and Licorice. What really stood out was how fresh it all was, and how each flavor was distinct and not crowded by any of the others. The acidity was nice and clean, and the tannins were super smooth and round. This is a wine that of course will improve with time as well, so to start off as it has only means good things for its future.
In short: I loved it!
I like to make a point with my wine reviews to consider the creative expressive aspect of tasting a wine. How can I pair this wine with more than just food and fancy restaurants...
For me, this was like going to one of the most interesting antique shops you could possibly stumble upon. Not one of those ones covered in dust, and with moths in the backs of cupboards.Rather, one of those antique shops where the purveyor lovingly cleans and restores the bounty that comes to them to its full brightness and potential. It had a classic cosy feel and felt humble despite the obvious craftsmanship at play. I would happily visit this antiques shop again to discover what else awaits me there.
So thank you @domaine_mordoree for producing such an expert wine.

- Bodega Chacra, Mainque chardonnay - 2021 🍾🥂
Whenever we get new Burgundy in the shop, Its nice to remind myself what the French Chardonnays are competing against from the rest of the world. This particular wine from @bodegachacra in Patagonia was a stand out contender for me.
The winery itself is one I admire deeply for it's commitment to nature - within and without its process of winemaking. You only need to spend a few minutes on their website to see that they don't just talk about grapes and wine, but about geography, local wildlife, flowers, soils, and biodynamic techniques. The whole thing is very wholesome.
The name is derived from the area of Patagonia they are based in, and is an early harvest of Chardonnay grapes due to a early ripening season. On the nose it is clean with nice lemon citrus notes, and a good saline quality that almost reminds me of a very crisp Alberino. It follows through on the palate with a delicious smooth green apple and lemon zest quality, along with a slight chalky edge. This is a wine I think that best compares to a ripe Chablis.
Also it has cute bees on the label, let's not forget!
Oh did you know the winemaker is also related to the sassicaia family in Italy. Wine Is in the Blood!
I would recommend you go find this wine and many of the others from Chacra as well if you want to see what can be done when the rule books are thrown out and winemaking and nature come together. Beautiful stuff.
As wine pairings go, maybe the label has me a bit biased, but I think I would want to take this down to my allotment or vegetable garden. Find a nice patch or grass in the sun, listen to the sound of insects buzzing, people busting themselves growing delicious ingredients, and enjoying the smells of tomato leaves and sweet peas. Heaven!
Stay tuned for my next video coming soon where I explore wine and music pairing as a concept.

- In my most recent video I explored this wonderful wine from the wine producer Jean Smitt of @damascenevineyards
The wine was a great clean expression of some rather old Chenin Blanc vines in Stellenbosch. Naturally after tasting a wine I like to read about it. Partly for the nerdy wine geek side of me and partly because it's nice to be transported somewhere else. To a land far away with mountains, unique Flora and fauna, a different culture and beautiful vineyards that adorn mountain-sides.
The vines themselves range in planting date from 1972 to 1982, making these vines really well established and creating nice concentrated grapes.
Flavour-wise I picked up on a strong green apple and lemon bright fruit profile with a hint of chalkiness and a touch of almond potentially from the resting sur lie that it does. In my opinion it was a really outstanding style of Chenin that I'm not accustomed to seeing from South Africa. The ones I have had in the past were rich oaky affairs with too much intensity. By contrast this was elegant and refined. I suspect with a few more years this will open up even more into some of the flavours I mentioned above and at that point I will try it again maybe around 2026.
Until then it was nice to be introduced to this wine, and it was a welcome clean touch after some quite rich apply Loire chenins I had previously tried this week.
It reminds me of hot sunny days. There was a little brook in Ireland that I used to walk near, stuck up on a Ridge of Land that would eventually fall away and create a very impressive waterfall that looks like something straight out of a fiction. It had that clean refreshing, almost enigmatic quality. Which I suppose I have to confess, does live up to the name of the wine. Was it an enlightened wine... I mean, in some respects yes. For me, it showed me an expression of Chenin that I have not been able to find much of before and for that I am grateful.

Have you been to Stellenbosch and tried their wines before? Tell me about it In the comments below.
- Merri Sunbury Shiraz - 2018
This Aussie wine is one of my recent favourite drinks to enjoy. It's a bombastic, fun, and juicy Shiraz that makes you smile. That's also why next week I will be recording a video with this wine, pairing it with some intriguing music. 🍷🪇🎺
(Who says wine should only be paired with food right!?)
So in that sense I will not say too much about next week's video for now, but rather will encourage you to explore this wine for yourself.
The story behind it is very heart-warming for a start! This wine is a special batch of Shiraz where only 1200 bottles were made, in collaboration with an Australian artist Hannah Fox. @hannahfoxart and the winemakers from the @hairyarmwineco Steve and Nat Worley. For every bottle of this wine that is sold 3 dollars will go to their local primary school building fund. So if you like charity, supporting education and drinking wine. This is a great place to start!
The artwork on the label is inspired by the local geography and in particular the Merri Creek. (NAME-DROP!). It looks lush and green and beautiful from the pictures I have seen and I hope I get the chance to visit one day.
The wine itself is a wild ferment whole-bunch wine, with a lovely rich plummy character and the telltale Shiraz hint of pepper in the finish. For me I also got hints of that dark chocolate style, where it is dressing it's flavour up a bit as coffee. Great acidity as well for a warm Shiraz.
Honestly this wine just sings and that's why next week I'll be pairing it with an Australian song that has been a playlist stalwart of mine for the last 15 years or so. Stay tuned.
Until that time! Go fetch yourself a bottle if you can get it.
Available at @leaandsandeman in the UK. £21.95
P.s. for complete transparency I do work there, but that's beside the point. This wine deserves a mention. 😊
- Studying wine can be hard! Especially when you are engaging with senses that don't always receive our fullest attention like our sense of smell. So how do we train these senses?
Answer in the video below!
- Yesterday I reacted to this incredible wine. The Quarts De Chaume - 1995. Now for the full review.
A couple of days ago I was doing a tasting with some colleagues of a few different Chenin Blanc after we had just received some Loire Valley Chenin from 1985 (more on that at a later date). During this comparison my colleague pulled out this surprise bottle... And my god it was a delight!
Do you remember that famous scene in the Pixar film Ratatouille? Where the food critic takes a bite of the dish he is to analyze and is suddenly transported in his mind's eye back to his childhood. A little French farm house, and his mum giving him a plate of farm fresh Ratatouille.
Yeah... That's how this wine acted on me. My first instinct was immediately apple crumble, the kind I used to smell in my mum's kitchen all the time as a kid. Particularly around mid to late summer when there were apples to spare.
When a wine can do this to you, any indication of whether it is objectively 'good' I think goes out of the window and flutters away like a butterfly on the breeze. It doesn't matter. To me, it was wonderful! 🦋
To try and describe it more adequately, it had an aroma profile of rich baked apples, rhubarb acidity, caramel, Demerara sugar, and early autumn breezes. It was a rich golden colour in the glass, and the wine was sweet. Not quite as rich and syrup-like as a full dessert wine, but very close.
Close enough that you would never serve this wine to someone in the army (you should never encourage them to dessert). (Sorry) 😅
Honestly, it probably was starting to lose a tiny bit of it's vitality at this point but I kinda don't care. It's been one of my favourite wine drinking experiences in a while, and I am determined now more than ever to get to the Loire Valley and understand its origins.

- Yalb and Shallan
It's been a long week so this picture took a bit longer to complete. As mentioned I'm slowly working my way back through the #StormlightArchive books by @brandsanderson .
This is still very early in the way of kings where Shallan makes it the Karbranth to meet her new mentor Jasnah Kholin.
I imagined Kharbranth as a Mediterranean port town similar in style to Croatia or east Italy. With a mix of Mediterranean plants and saturated warm colours. Of course the plants here are very different to ours so I only wanted to imply a bit of greenery rather than to try and unpack what a crem covered tree might look like.
Yalb is a character I really like, he is cheeky, charming and a bit of a chancer. He seems to have a very good heart and a bit of a soft spot for Shallan. Naturally I wanted him to embody that flirty and cheeky side, whilst also getting across that he is still a really quite young gangly sailor who still has a lot of filling out to do.
Shallan in this image is still a rustic country girl travelling for the first time, so I wanted her dress to be a bit more carefree than how she is often depicted. Almost classical Greek style. Long, flowy and loose. The pattern was sort of inspired by the shattered plains with small segments getting bigger as you go further. A small nod to what comes later.
I know this post is getting quite long so I'll finally say that I'm loving doing patterns in these drawings, particularly in the clothes. For some reason the world of Roshar has always seemed very intricate and pattern-like simply because the story itself talks about patterns often. In the shapes the spren makes, the landscapes, and the glyphs, etc. So why not the clothes as well.
Anyway, I hope you like it.

- Szeth Son Son Vallano.
My reading of the @brandsanderson
Stormlight archive continues in preparation for the next novel.
This was a really fun piece to do. Honestly I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, as before this, I've always had a harder time imagining Szeth in a defined way. It's amazing how putting ideas to paper can really condense your imagination.
This is a quick cut away from chapter 2 where he is about to assassinate King Gavilar.
I wanted to continue expressing this slightly more Mediterranean, Arabic, north African vibe I have been looking at. I wanted Szeth to be clearly pale skinned and almost albino. Someone who would be almost ghostly to the other darker skinned Alethi folk. (See my last image of Gavilar for reference) I realize this isn't canon, but I am enjoying myself and this style. In my mind the world of Roshar always felt a bit more hot in parts, and more desolate than most of Europe. Except Shinovar of course.
Szeth is naturally a very gifted and athletic sky breaker and so I wanted him to strike quite a strong and athletic physique while still appearing slim. It was also important to me that he was intimidating but someone who is so unfocused in their mind that they appear almost as if they are just not engaged. I kept his eyes specifically unfocused as if he is just staring at the cinema screen of his own thoughts.
Anyways I am always happy to hear feedback. Let me know what you think.
- It's come to that time of year. The next book in the @brandsanderson stormilight archive is looking like it's about a year or so away. Which means it's time to re-read the previous novels and get myself up to speed.
HOWEVER
This time I want to take things a bit slower and finally realize a thought that has been on my mind for over a decade. I'd love to start illustrating what I see in my mind's eye when I read these books. So I am going to take it piece by piece and illustrate people and moments in the book as they come.
In this instance I give you King Gavilar Kholin. Wearing his family colours of blue with gold trim and sporting a middle aged slightly graying top bun, with a little gold circlet around his head signifying his position as king of Alethkar. I wanted him to be quite thickset and athletic. Someone who is very strong (after all he is known as a master of the shard blade). But also someone who has settled a bit into his more political role and gained a small bit of weight. This is an image I imagined just before he welcomes the Parshendi to his realm, just before he is killed by Szeth.
Whenever I have seen illustrations for the #stormlightarchive they tend to be depicted in either East Asian or Western medieval styles. However for me, they have always come to me a bit more Mediterranean/North African/Islamic vibes. Hopefully people will enjoy this change of style.
Anyways, I'll update with new images as and when they come.

- What is the myth we tell for Blockchain:
Myths are the stories that reflect who we are and what we aspire to. Bitcoin, and by extension, the Blockchain technology was born of a financial crash that devastated peoples finances. I can remember people lining up outside banks and being told money was just not there.
The myth of Blockchain was one of empowerment, personal responsibility, the desire to remove yourself from greedy institutions, privacy and immutability. The myth was good. Sometimes I fear that in the good run that has become the Crypto space, that myth has been lost.
Remember why we are here, why we build. It is for a brighter future for all, not just for a few.

Peoples thoughts so far on whether it's good, sustainable, useful, etc?
- Just finished reading the 'Enlightened Spaniel" trilogy. As someone who really loves the study of meditation and spirituality, this book was a genuine surprise. It would on the surface appear to be a basic introduction to Buddhism via the lens of a pair of dogs who live in England.
But the depth that was achieved with this very cute story was impressive. I would genuinely recommend this to any friend who wanted to understand the confluence of meditation practices and buddhist philosophy.
The only caveat I will give it is that it's very English. There is a fair amount of cultural slang and references that might not always be universally understood. But don't let that put you off. This is what Google is for right?
- As an illustrator I love all the new styles, expressions, and tools available to really push the boundaries of visual communication. But I also love and deeply respect the ability to convey so much with so little. Truly one of the masters.

- I've been considering what values are the most obviously conditioned in our society. For the most part it feels like intense and singular focus is a value of the capitalist world. In order to succeed you need to be completely focussed on your expertise and craft. Supported by your side interests. But what if you are an appreciator trope? The kind of person who likes to understand a wide array of topics, hobbies, pass-times, crafts, etc. What if you see beauty everywhere but time limits your ability to dig incredibly deep on all of it.
Is there value in being someone who is good at a lot, but never achieves greatness?

- Education in Crypto: making the case for a more wholesome approach.
It is fair to say the public perception of crypto and the underlying Blockchain technology is far from shining. I'm sure we have all seen the words ponzi, scam, capitalist - fired at the industry. And in many cases, the words were not misplaced.
So how does this Blockchain industry earn back the trust of people. I would personally advocate for grassroots approaches that empower people on an individual basis. Not to make tonnes of money, but to be free. In the era of CBDC and global inflation, government overreach and corporate monopolies, we should not be analyzing whether there is risk appetite in massive institutions such as Black Rock to buy Bitcoin and support its growth. But instead advocating for the privacy, autonomy and creativity that can be found by shifting away from corporate and government forms of ownership.
It is clear that technology is empowering entrenched powers to become even more powerful. Blockchain, as a decentralized network, offers an alternative. An antidote. With alternative economies we can create a much fairer, much more just system and it's time that people knew about that.
- We are working on some card backs for the game. When we release this there will be many different backs to choose from to suit your own style.

I would totally holiday here!
- From this evenings discussion on the way politics and technology intersect.
"I see positive moves coming from technology that will go well beyond the means of interested parties of humans to effectively control. Pandoras box has been opened and I think systemic change is coming regardless of the will to slow or stop it. One potential manifestation of this evolution could be a net good thing for the majority of people.
The mutual arising of blockchain technology, allowing for anyone to set up a decentralized network. Alongside extremely advanced algorithms that could supercede nearly every kind of human labour means we will soon see a world where there is no labour force, nor a controlled network of activity from which to extract wealth from.
In summary, economics as we know it dies.
Perhaps the role of government now is not to keep the boat steady, but instead to be replaced by a new peoples collective, learning how to sail on new waters."
