**Lake Urmia: A Dying Lake in Iran**
Lake Urmia is a saltwater lake located in the northwest of Iran. It was once the second largest saltwater lake in the world, but it has been shrinking rapidly since the mid-1980s. In 2015, the lake had lost about 88% of its area.
There are several reasons for the shrinking of Lake Urmia. One reason is climate change. The region has been experiencing more frequent and severe droughts in recent years. Another reason is the overuse of water resources in the lake's catchment area. Water from the lake has been used to irrigate crops and build dams. This has reduced the amount of water flowing into the lake.
The shrinking of Lake Urmia has had a number of negative impacts. The lake was home to a variety of plant and animal species, many of which have been threatened or endangered by the loss of habitat. The lake also played an important role in the local economy, providing jobs in fishing and tourism.
