What a joy it was to work on this piece for @lens/rickydata!! When I posted an open commission last month I didn't know what to expect, but I was excited to try something new.
While composing this piece, I was working with the idea of light (luz). There is an ascending chord progression that repeats and develops as I imagine shimmering light would. I had fun playing with unexpected chord changes and gestures that capture the theme.
The final step of the commission was bringing the music to life at @lens/chrislippincott's studio here in Nashville. I love how his felted piano exposes delicate overtones that are otherwise unheard.

There are times in life when circumstances don’t add up in your favour. Times where you need to start from scratch. I’ve become too familiar with this feeling - be it moving to a new city, going back to school, starting a new job, ending a relationship, becoming a single parent, losing money… there is always a cycle of gain and loss.
It hurts. And part of you wants to quit and give up on yourself. But humans are inherently resilient creatures. We are designed to take blows and heal. So the other option is for us to simply rebuild. We look at our place in the world and realize that maybe it’s not so bad. Others might be suffering a loss far worse than what we’ve experienced. We put our life into perspective, take the things that we have remaining, the things that we love, and we move forward.

- Liliya and Ariff spent the rest of the evening deep in conversation, but parted ways without exchanging contact details. Still, Ariff was hopeful they might see each other again – following the Kazak wedding, Ariff’s friend and Liliya’s cousin had a second wedding celebration planned in Malaysia in a few weeks time. Ariff figured Liliya, as a bridesmaid, would likely be there, although he didn’t know for sure.

We went out to interview people from all walks of life. Different ages. Different ethnicities. All answering the same question
“Were you ever in love?” The idea was to showcase how I felt in my song “Lone Wolf” through the lens of strangers.
From directing, to shooting, to editing, this was a whole project that we fully completed ourselves. No outside help. Just us, a camera, a song, and an idea. I cannot begin to express how proud I am of this video and excited that it now lives on-chain. 🤝
