- Heavy showers ended our football game. We took cover under a willow tree where I used the opportunity to teach the little apes how to climb a tree. Good times 🐥
- Hmm.. smart contracts soon on Kaspa.

- Tomatoes planted. For this experiment I have three different tomato varieties: red and yellow cherry tomato (seeds taken from supermarket tomatoes) and orange small berry tomato (seeds from last season so they can be actually cross breeds.. we'll see later on 😅)
I had lots of seedlings since you need to have buffer. Some break when transplanting, fungus gnats or some other disease might kill half etc. Tried to select plant individuals that were similar size to have unbiased results.
My chemistry teacher always liked to say that the fine line of fucking around and doing science is taking notes! Every plant is labeled and for every variety I have one reference soil mix without biochar.
Like I said in my previous post the aim here is to compare yield. I hope at least one variety with test and reference survives to produce fruit. I'll be posting the progress and eventual weight of harvested tomatoes.
Let's keep fingers crossed the night frost stays away since it's a bit early to plant outside this time of year where I live even though the weather has been hot and sunny ☀️😎
Happy gardening frens!
- Let's continue with the biochar experiment.
Biochar has been mixed with chicken poo and watered, let sit for a week or so. Now I'm diluting it down so that there is 2dl of chicken poo and about 3% or biochar for every 10L of soilmix. I'm using peat for the bulk of soilmix. It has been pH stabilised with limestone and basic nutrients added during manufacturing. Peat is superior for growing tomatoes.
~25 L is added in every growbag. I've found it to be optimal for 1-2 plants per bag.
I can recommend these growbags (45 L non-woven fleece like material around 4$/piece from Amazon), lasted already 4 seasons with no signs of wear. They are sturdy and can be packed away neatly when you don't need them!
Inner bags are not mandatory if water permeation isn't a problem for you. I prefer them since nutrients are not flushed away and less watering is needed.

- Gm everyone. 🙂
Uncle Joonathan told us yesterday that Farcaster will play a very important role in the future of Phaver. The integration of both Lens and Farcaster will be key to the success of our favorite app. I also heard yesterday that 20K people have connected to Warpcast via Phaver, but the Phaver group itself only has 2.3K followers. 🫣
WHERE ARE YOU GUYS, FOR GOD'S SAKE?
I myself only have 5(!) followers at the moment... 😳
Let's get together and put our shoulders to the wheel, frens. Follow me, and I'll definitely follow you back. Phaver is our home, guys, but Farcaster should become our holiday home. That's what Joonathan and the team want.
I am Farcastor.eth ...😉
...and that cat? Just to get your attention. 😜😂

- Meanwhile let's transfer some cherry tomato seedlings into bigger pots (milk cartons in this case 🤫).
Tomatoes are best example of a plant forming adventitious roots. Meaning that they grow roots from stem that is buried under the soil. Other plants might rot but tomatoes and potatoes for example create strong root system if the stalk is buried = more yield. And yield farming is my thing! 🤗
So let's clip the few cotyledons and first leave pairs with scissors and base the root ball on the bottom of the pot. Add soil above and water. Overwatering can be prevented by using pots with drain holes.
Be careful since the seedlings are fragile and snap easily but are also bendy if you are delicate as you can see.

- Doing a biochar doped soil mix. Step 1: crush wood char into coarse texture. Step 2: water it and add chicken manure ~2dl for every 10 litres of soil you are planning to make. Step 3: Let it sit for a week or so. This is the load period for nutrients to be adsorped onto the huge carbon surface area. I'll do a comparison with and without carbon to see benefits.
Literature says that biochar greatly improves water retention and bioflora in the soil. This is good for root system. Nutrients are slowly released and are not flushed from the soil/or are not concentrated so that it affects roots negatively. Risk is that the nutrients are sucked into the carbon and plant doesn't have food to grow (like medicine activated charcoal binds poison from stomach).
Biochar deposits (Terra preta) in top soil is argued to be the one of the reasons indigenous people in south America managed to grow crops in low fertile Amazon basin and grow as a society.

- Cherry tomato seedlings growing nicely. Built a grow light from scrap lying around: old floor lamp stand, leftover AL ledstrip profile and hzled cob elements, which I feel are superior to ledstrip - easy to solder, can be screwed to the aluminum profile and thick AL backplate with heat transfer paste = good heat management -> more hours/lux 🔥
