- **Learning zk-Proofs: A Beginner's Guide 1/x**
Hello, there!
You might recall from our first post (you can check it out here: https://hey.xyz/posts/0x8218-0x0279 ) that I've embarked on a journey to learn zk-proofs. Initially, I wanted to grasp zk-proofs for the @zksync.lens contest on @code4rena.lens. But now, my goal extends beyond that.
I'll be sharing my personal notes, explaining the basics, and providing links to more advanced topics. Learning in public benefits us all.
Let's start from scratch: prime numbers, modulo operations, and finite fields.
*For a better visual understanding, watch this video*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dpCwJsuozY
**What's a Prime Number?**
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_number
A prime number is quite simple to understand. It's a number that can only be divided by 1 and itself. For example, 7, 11, 41, 5003... These are all prime numbers.
**What's Modulo?**
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulo
Modulo, often written as %, is a basic math operation. It helps find the remainder when one number is divided by another. For instance, if you divide 7 by 3, you get a quotient of 2 and a remainder of 1. So, 7 % 3 equals 1.
**What's a Finite Field?**
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite_field
Think of finite fields as 12-hour clocks like the one in your mom's kitchen. For example, in a finite field with base p = 7, you have numbers from 0 to 6. When you count past 6, it resets to 0. Here are some examples:
- 2 + 2 = 4, just like adding 2 hours on the clock.
- 6 + 1 = 0. It's like the clock resetting: (6 + 1) % 7 = 0.
- 3 + 15 = (18 % 7) = 4.
Multiplication in this field works like adding the number to itself. For example:
- 2 * 3 = 6, simply adding 2 three times.
- 3 * 3 = 9 % 7 = 2, following the same rule.
These concepts are basic but essential for understanding what's happening in zk-proofs! 🚀🧮
