- **Perp DEX is one of the best-performing protocols in recent months 📈**
**But what if I told you that the Perp DEX growth is still in its infancy?**
In this mega 🧵, I will explain why I am bullish on Perp DEX and why I am even more bullish on DEX building on #StarkNet
Let's take a look at the following:
➡️1. The current market state, including CEX vs. DEX data
➡️2. Why most people continue to use CEX
➡️3. What can be done to change the situation
➡️4. Why you shouldn't sleep on Starknet's order book and Perp DEX
➡️1. The current market state, including CEX vs. DEX data
The situation is clear centralized exchanges (CEX) dominate decentralized exchanges (DEX) in both spot and derivative markets
Let's start with the spot : *picture 2*
When comparing the 5 largest CEX with the 5 largest DEX, we observe that 90% of the trading volume occurs on CEX, whereas only 10% takes place on DEX 🤔
In the derivatives market, the statistics are even more striking 😨 : *picture 3*
At present, more than 98% of the derivatives volume is executed on CEX, while the three largest Perp DEX (#DYDX, #GMX, and #GNS) represent only 1.09% of the total volume
Although this may seem worrying at first sight, these data are excellent news, as they show that the growth potential of DEX (and especially Perp DEX) is still massive 🤯
Before explaining why, let's try to understand why most users stay on CEX.
➡️2. Why most people continue to use CEX
Simply for UX reasons.
The majority of crypto investors have limited time to devote to this sector and prefer easy-to-use platforms. Additionally, people aged 40 and older are used to depositing their money in a bank and letting 'experts' manage it for them.
Consider the perspective of these people; they have the option to choose between:
👉 An all-in-one platform (spot trading, leverage, staking, exclusive features) with an easy-to-understand UX, a wide choice of trading pairs, and low fees
👉 DeFi, which requires hours of reading and experimentation to understand, is costly, and is anything but intuitive
When dealing with DeFi, you should:
👉Install a wallet, copy the seed phrase, and store it in a secure place (losing it will result in the loss of all your assets with no chance of recovery)
👉Buy the gas token of the blockchain you are transferring to
👉 Jump from blockchain to blockchain (so use expensive bridges) and purchase gas tokens of all blockchains you are moving on to buy and trade different assets
👉Paye tens or even hundreds $ of fees when you want to use the dApp with the most volume (so on #ETH)
Above all, you have to understand what a bridge and a wallet are, why gas is expensive on ETH, what the underlying blockchain is when buying assets on a new chain, etc.
On a CEX, such as #binance #kucoin #bybit, everything is available in one interface without the need to understand everything
For example, you can buy multi-blockchain assets with just a few clicks
Therefore, people currently prefer the user experience over the real possession of their funds 😞
We can understand this, as #DeFi is currently far too complicated, expensive, and time-consuming.
➡️3. What can be done to change the situation
There are 3 ways to compete:
👉Offer features that CEX do not offer
👉Improve the overall UX of DEX and DeFi
👉Passively observe the failure of central players (like #FTX) and regulations that slow down the progress of CEX
💡 Offer features that CEX do not offer 💡
Currently, DeFi offers several advantages over CEX:
- Full ownership of funds
- Non-custodial, permissionless, and KYC-free trading
- Better yields than central players can offer
More is needed 🤔
New features are being gradually implemented, including:
- The possibility of providing liquidity on a Perp DEX, (and thus to become a kind of market maker)
- Access to exotic options trading, available on platforms Buffer Finance, Lyra Finance and Premia Finance
- The possibility to trade stocks and commodities, currently available on Gains Network and soon on GMX and Metavault.Trade
- The opportunity to profit from the growth of dApps via the #RealYield mechanism
In short, there are many new and exciting features emerging 🥰
💡 Improve the overall UX of DEX and DeFi 💡
The two biggest barriers to using DeFi currently are:
👉The risky and non-intuitive nature of crypto wallets
👉The high cost of DeFi infrastructure
Concerning the first point, there is a feature that everyone has been talking about since WalletCon in Denver: Account Abstraction (AA)
Indeed, this exciting feature has been recently deployed on the ETH mainnet: https://twitter.com/erc4337/status/1631087958949531648
Despite this great news, it should be noted that #Starknet natively supports Account Abstraction, and both Starknet wallets have been developing and using the potential of AA on it for a while:
- @braavos.lens, with its security features, especially its latest Multi-Signer (3FA) one: https://twitter.com/myBraavos/status/1627574794961944578
- Argent X, with its Web2 features: https://twitter.com/argentHQ/status/1622628014092611586
In short, AA improves wallet security, eliminates the limitations of seed phrases that traditional wallets have and provides the same user experience as Web2.
Speaking of Web2, Visa is currently working on this feature with the StarkWare tech 🤯 : https://twitter.com/catgu_/status/1604896035616264205
The first major problem is about to be solved, and it is probably the most important step forward for crypto adoption 🤗
Regarding the cost of DeFi infrastructure, technological innovations in the crypto industry are increasingly reducing usage costs.
The most notable example is the development of L2, especially L2 ZK 💭
L2 allow users to use DeFi with the security of ETH but without its high cost.
For instance, on Starknet, users will be able to benefit from exceptional transaction finality while having the security of ETH
The second problem is also about to be solved
➡️4. Why you shouldn't sleep on Starknet's order-book and Perp DEX
Many Perp DEX are being developed on L2 (picture 4), such as:
👉 #dYdX on #StarkEx
👉 GMX, GNS and #VELA exchange on #Arbitrum
👉 GNS and #MVX on #Polygon
This is a good start, but dYdX is the only Perp DEX using ZK technology to date
The L2 ZK will drive the Perp DEX to new levels.
In my opinion, Starknet is the best L2 ZK for this purpose, due to its superior technology and the perfect environment it provides for DeFi development:
- #Cairo and the STARK technology: Unlike all other L2 ZK, the technology behind Starknet is already in production and has been battle-tested with StarkEx for years.
StarkWare has proven that their technology works and provides exceptional scalability
StarkWare is currently developing the permissionless version of StarkEx : Starknet.
In addition to this, the Starks proofs used by Starknet are more efficient than Snark proofs used by some competing L2 : https://twitter.com/EliBenSasson/status/1633559861022654464
- In terms of UX, Starknet provides native support for Account Abstraction (AA), making it the ideal environment for AA to fully express.
The two Starknet wallets, @braavos.lens and Argent X, are already producing unique features never seen before in the DeFi space
➡️ Conclusion
Starknet is built on a technology that has already demonstrated exceptional performance (in particular for the Perp DEX use thanks to dYdX) and it provides the tools to create a user-friendly environment and break down the important barriers that Web3 faces.
Investing in Starknet's DEX is therefore an investment in one of the biggest growth areas of DeFi, and allows investors to do so on the most promising #L2 Zk, which is already solving many of the concerns that the crypto industry faces in terms of mass adoption
In my upcoming post, I will present in detail all the Starknet order-book and Perp DEX.

- Best Practices for Securing Your Web3 Wallet
1. Never share your private keys with anyone, as they can be used to steal your funds.
2. Protect your web3 activity from prying eyes by using a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts your internet traffic.
3. Be cautious of phishing scams: Phishing scams are common in web3. Be wary of unsolicited emails and messages that ask for personal information or request you to visit a particular website.
4. Use a hardware wallet: A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your private keys offline, making it harder for hackers to steal them.
