- **After run thoughts on Going Permissionless with Lens**
A few days ago, a Lens Improvement Proposal (LIP) was introduced, suggesting we transition to a permissionless model. This marks a significant milestone, as it implies opening our carefully curated garden to all comers.
This move is pivotal. Lens was envisioned as an open social graph, and becoming permissionless will realize this vision. I am wholeheartedly in favor of this transition.
However, I urge caution during this process. My concerns lie not with the concept of being permissionless, but with the transition itself.
Transitioning to a permissionless model means opening our doors to everyone. We've previously seen spikes in spam following rumors of airdrops etc on crypto Twitter, attracting accounts that view our platform as merely a field to farm for future gains.
This necessitates a vigilant approach to combating spam, reporting abuse, and investing in algorithms and strategies to mitigate these risks. Early measures are in place, and as a community, we can curtail noise by curating our social graphs. The shift to permissionless must acknowledge the potential influx of malicious users, which could disrupt the experience for new joiners. We must prepare for this eventuality.
Moreover, Lens is not entirely free; profile creation incurs a cost borne by someone. With an open model, this could deter some from joining or serve as a barrier for sybil resistance. The cost of creating a Lens profile may be a novel concept for non-web3 users. Going permissionless could impose financial burdens on Lens, its front-ends, or its users due to the initial creation costs. We must be deliberate about how and why we manage these costs.
This opens the question of who should join Lens. Essentially, Lens is a meta-layer, a social graph atop which clients create social applications. As we move to a permissionless model, ensuring that current front-ends can manage new users and provide proper onboarding becomes critical.
New users will likely discover Lens through apps, placing the social graph second. This could lead to a fully open, interoperable social graph, but we must ensure our apps are ready for this transition.
For many new users, Lens most likely will initially appear as a single social app offering various forms of engagement. Over time, they –so i hope– appreciate the graph's interoperability and the ability to port their network and content.
Ideally, becoming permissionless will encourage development atop Lens's open social graph, leading to innovative social experiences beyond traditional models. Lens is not a Twitter clone; it's a network offering diverse experiences like games, stores, and collaboration platforms.
However, my concern is whether we have sufficiently demonstrated the difference between Lens and platforms like Farcaster (Twitter 2.0). We need to showcase truly unique social experiences beyond traditional posting, such as mini-games, messenger apps, digital storefronts, community radio, and and and and, so we can leverage the Lens profile for a richer, interconnected experience.
We should focus on creating new spaces enabled through our shared social graph rather than sticking to conventional historic app with timelines and feeds. This approach will differentiate us from platforms like Slack and Twitter.
Believing in a permissionless model means reigniting the creative spark among builders to explore social multiplayer experiences and integrate Lens into various web3 applications. I envision a world where I can see my network's activities on a DEX or discover new apps through a Lens-powered app store, and I am open to explore this further with builders.
This is the advent of the real-time onchain multiplayer world.
Finally, facilitating user discovery beyond their first app is crucial. We are on our journey with portals and open actions, enabling cross-connections through mini-apps. We need to expand on this.
I am eager for us to adopt a permissionless model, moving beyond being a gated community. We must ensure we are prepared to onboard and inspire the next generation of builders to create novel social experiences where creators can thrive.
Disclaimer: I have supported @lens/stani and the team early in Lens's journey, so I have very strong opinions, that are my owns on this.

- Today I stumbled across an open source search engine. This looks interesting - an open API you can use for free and for now a totally Ad free search experience. Here is the abstract how they describe themselves:
*Stract is an open source search engine where the user has the ability to see exactly what is going on and customize almost everything about their search results. It's a search engine made for hackers and tinkerers just like ourselves. No more searches where some of the terms in the query arent used, and the engine tries to guess what you really meant. You get what you search for.*

- **Lucasfilm built a Metaverse almost 40 years ago?**
Lucasfilm's Habitat was arguably one of the first attempts to create a very large scale commercial multi-user virtual environment. It was developed by Lucasfilm Games in association with an online service for the Commodore 64. While the underlying technology was rather basic, Habitat was ambitious in scope.
The term 'Metaverse' is not explicitly mentioned in this document. The concept was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel 'Snow Crash', which postdates the development of Habitat. However, the document describes Habitat as a 'multi-player online virtual environment' where users can communicate, play, embark on adventures, start businesses, and so on. This already indicates characteristics of a metaverse.

- 🚨The EU is on the brink of passing the "chat control" bill, which threatens end-to-end encryption & the privacy rights of citizens.
If approved, this bill will mandate providers to automatically scan private messages, chats and emails for "suspicious content."
At XMTP Labs, we staunchly oppose measures that jeopardize privacy and secure encryption.
Privacy is a fundamental right for everyone.
