🚬CIGAWRETTE PACKS: A SMOKEY PHILOSOPHICAL DISCOURSE
One cig can alter your world, but every puff comes with a price!
Cigawrette Packs is an avant-garde literature project, comprising 9999 NFTs that probe the nebulous intersection of PFP, utility, and aesthetic value. It’s a countercultural manifesto and an incisive OnChain critique, transforming the mundane cigarette pack from a basic nicotine dispensary into a potent symbol of creativity and art’s pivotal role in our crypto-capitalist lore. The collection includes unique specials like ‘Ainslie Country Exploration,’ a recent ad series in collaboration with Lens. This collection highlights the project’s commitment to artistic innovation and cultural commentary.
These basic card boxes, initially designed to hook consumers and obscure the health risks of the dirty substance’s intake, are reimagined here as canvases for creation and fast-consumed literature. This move challenges us—degens, canceled, supra-nihilists, NEETs, and techno-philosophers—to reassess the significance of daily objects and their potential to generate new meanings and narratives within various contexts.
Its intentional ambiguity calls for personal interpretation, with meanings that shift based on one’s background and worldview. Here’s my take, with some insights from Lofo Verboten, who manages the project after the artist’s departure.
TAKING BACK CONTROL WITH ART AND WORDS
The Cigawrettes’ blank warning labels are a bold confrontation to the consumerist culture that shapes our perceptions through omnipresent messages. Showing these spaces as empty, the packs help us consider the plots that are regularly imposed on us by advertising and government bodies.
The act of inscribing these "fill as you wish" blanks is emblematic of reclaiming one’s voice in a society that often relegates us to the role of passive consumers (or smokers).
ABSURDISM MAXXING
Rooted in deep absurdist philosophy, Cigawrette Packs become a support where traditional symbols of health hazards and addiction are turned into vessels for artistic expression. This contrast cultivates a sense of the absurd, challenging the conventional stories that cling to the good ol’ cigarette packs.
“‘Cigarettes with eyes is pretty absurd, no?” Lofo mused when I asked about the themes of absurdism and nihilism the project seems to convey. “As to nihilism, from my understanding Pappachaga—the artist behind this project—approached it as a positive belief system. Not in terms of happiness or sadness, but as affirming rather than negating. Perhaps he found absurdity in the belief that nothing matters. I share this perspective. It is a belief, and as such, it imparts meaning, regardless of the nature of that belief—even if it is often perceived as avoidant and depressing.” He added, “Not sure what it has to do with cigawrettes.”
Perhaps the blank labels are the key. Perhaps it invites people to find their own meanings in spaces traditionally marked by caution, thus welcoming the chaos of existence to discover personal significance. Who knows?
EXISTENTIALISM AND METAMODERNISM
Cigawrettes seem to have something to say about existential themes, especially the idea of defining yourself through creation. Using the blank labels (via Cigbot.life), everyone can join in a kind of self-creation, shaping their identity with their contributions.
The engagement strategy is multifaceted and resonates with different audiences. While interactive elements—similar to Choose Your Own Adventure and Interactive Theatre—are not central to the experience, they add a layer of participation. However, not everyone prefers this mode of interaction. “I’m not really sure. I always hated those Choose Your Own Adventure books. I want to watch the show, not wonder if there’s another TV I need to watch to figure out who killed so and so,” Lofo expressed. This perspective underscores the importance of providing a cohesive narrative that doesn’t require viewers to seek out additional paths to understand the core story.
This endeavor is definitely situated within the framework of metamodernism, which reconciles the polarities of sincerity and irony, hope and doubt. It exemplifies this oscillation, encouraging creativity while acknowledging the ironic twist of repurposing consumer goods as art mediums.
THE CIGAWRETTE CONUNDRUM
In this conceptual script, the cigarette pack leaves its physical form to become a simulacrum—a representation without an original. This resonates with Baudrillard’s hyperreality, where the lines between the actual and the simulated move away. It challenges the authenticity and relevance of digital artifacts in an era where tangibility is no longer paramount. By co-opting corporate aesthetics, Cigawrette Packs engage in a subversive act, employing the language of marketing to critique the systems it mirrors and to reflect on the pervasive corporate influence in our daily lives.
In the same vein, while downstream of influential NFT collections, Cigawrette Packs contribute to this evolving narrative. Derivative works and collaborations within it, such as those related to Milady, enrich the ecosystem by weaving shared cultural references and symbols. “The whole internet is awash in images and symbols mashed together. It is all essentially one massive collaborative effort,” Lofo added.
The influence of Remilia’s Milady, with its community-driven approach, sets a precedent for projects like Cigawrette Packs. The integration and interaction with such pioneers are not just about the transfer of aesthetic or thematic elements but also about the fusion of communities and the shared evolution of value. As Cigawrettes or CigNet as its members call themselves navigate this landscape, it invites the community to explore its utility and potential through Cigbot.life, alt accounts, bot accounts, and rabbit holes. It promises a back-and-forth through an interconnected ecosystem.
CYBERBOTANICAL PARADISE
Cigawrettes state that they are an initial building block to bring about a cyberbotanical paradise that seems to symbolize a utopian intersection where technology and ecological mindfulness merge. This vision critiques prevailing environmental practices and offers an optimistic perspective on what might be accomplished through progress. It represents a hopeful future where art and technology are leveraged to forge a more balanced existence.
In this context, Lofo’s observation that ‘Cigawrettes are carbon neutral’ adds a provocative dimension to the discourse. It invites us to scrutinize the environmental impact of our actions and the products we consume. The statement encourages a deeper understanding of the full lifecycle of products in our pursuit of sustainability.
From my understanding, the notion of cigarettes being carbon neutral is a complex one, as it involves considering the entire process from production to disposal. The environmental footprint of cigarettes is indeed significant, and efforts to reduce their impact are crucial as we strive for a carbon-neutral future.
AN EVOLVING DISCOURSE
Cigawrettes are both fluid and vaporous. They invite tons of interpretations, and my current text is just a super tiny facet of what the project has to say. As a collective artwork and story, it evolves with each new expression, emphasizing the power of shared creativity and the impact of the network.

- On our penultimate episode of the season, we’re speaking with Irina Marinescu, co-founder and CEO of buidlbox, a global hub for builders to learn, earn, and connect in web3.
Irina is also a mentor at Tachyon and a founder of Women in Crypto, and she previously worked as General Counsel at Gitcoin throughout its disaffiliation process to decentralize Gitcoin Holdings (which later became Supermodular) from GitcoinDAO back in Spring 2022.
It was during this transition period that Gitcoin’s bounties and hackathons product, which was originally launched in 2017 by Kevin Owocki, began morphing into what is now buidlbox, and in February 2023 at ETH Denver, buidlbox officially launched. Around that time, Supermodular (previously Gitcoin Holdings) decided to shift its entire focus to supporting the thriving buidlbox platform.
In this episode, Irina shares updates on where buidlbox stands today and how it is shaping the future of learning and work, what she learned from the Gitcoin disaffiliation process, both from a legal and an organizational perspective, and how non-technical people can get involved in hackathons and building in the space.
We then get into the recent SAB 121 bill that President Biden recently vetoed, why Irina believes the SEC hasn’t exactly been aligned with the crypto ecosystem, and the one thing we need to do more of to help regulators change their minds about crypto.

- 🌞Good morning! I have put together a short summary of my current research on the concepts of authorship and post-authorship in the new internet age.
The research is still ongoing, but here is what I have so far.

— POST-AUTHORSHIP FOR THE NOOBS —
With tech’s rapid leap forward, post-authorship has been a big deal over the last few years. In Web3 & decentralized environments, it refers to the evolving concept of content creation and ownership. Different from classic authorship where the creator's work is done once it goes live, post-authorship allows authors to stay involved in the life cycle of their content 4eva. Writers, artists, degens, and builders alike can use on-chain tech to maintain control over their work, even after it’s been released. In the end, this process often results in pieces that cultivate community and frens-ships.
Its relevance here lies in its potential to bring up next-gen synergy formats between creators, their content, and their audience. It offers a better model for monetization and distribution, where authors can benefit from their work on an ongoing basis and engage with their network in meaningful and spiritual ways.
For example, on many Web3 publishing platforms, writers with a wallet can publish their texts and let readers collect words that resonate with them. This provides them with a new ca$h stream but also generates knit-knit bonds with their audience, who can now own a piece of something they enjoy.
This radical shift from the Web2 style authorship to the decentralized one is a big step in how content is handled. This transition is facilitated by using protocols that invite contributors to co-create, share, and monetize content transparently and securely. It represents a flex move towards an ecosystem where individual creativity turns into a team effort that is a win-win for everyone on board.
THE EVOLUTION OF AUTHORSHIP
Historically, authorship began as a collective practice, with works often created collaboratively or passed down orally before being attributed to any single individual. This evolved during the French Renaissance, a period that emphasized individual creativity and legal rights, exemplified by figures such as Montaigne. The Romantic era furthered this individualism, idolizing authors like Wordsworth as solitary geniuses.
Today, Web3 technologies are stimulating a return to collective creation, facilitated by decentralized platforms that allow for transparent and shared ownership of creative works. Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are once again reconceptualized within this framework, enabling direct creator-to-consumer interactions without traditional intermediaries.
The distinction between copyright and authorship is becoming increasingly important, as the nature of their functions evolves in the context of digital autonomy and authority. Copyright now often serves to protect individual interests within collective frameworks, while authorship is being redefined by the collaborative ethos of Web3 communities.
This move to digital authorship has been transformative, enabling the lonely writer to embrace a more communal and interactive form of creation. Indeed, the web has democratized the publishing process, allowing authors to bypass the establishment and reach audiences directly through blogs, social media, and self-publishing platforms from the comfort of their sofa or local coffee shop. This new landscape has also seen the emergence of new genres and forms of writing, such as fanfiction and team-oriented storytelling, challenging the very notions of originality in the literary field.
WEB3 AND THE DECENTRALIZATION OF CREATION
Blockchain permits a decentralized approach by granting participants access to a distributed network for validating and recording transactions. This is achieved through a consensus mechanism that ensures everyone agrees on the validity of transactions without the need for a central authority. The technology’s inherent features—such as immutability, transparency, and security—facilitate trust among users and bring an efficient system that operates independently of centralized control.
In such a context, NFTs and DAOs play a pivotal role in supporting grouped property and creation. NFTs certify both the uniqueness and ownership of digital assets on the network, letting creators monetize their work in new ways. DAOs, on the other hand, enable a unified governance structure where decisions are made democratically by token holders. Together, they provide a model where communities can collectively own, manage, and benefit from digital creations, leading to a more inclusive and participatory digital economy.
THE IMPACT ON CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
Post-authorship significantly impacts various creative sectors by altering the traditional dynamics of content creation, proof of belonging, and distribution:
• Art: In the art world, post-authorship pushes collaborative pieces where multiple artists contribute to a single work. The final piece can be tokenized as an NFT, providing a way to verify authenticity and ownership while also enabling artists to grab royalties from future sales.
• Music: Musicians can use post-authorship to create songs that evolve with contributions from different creators. Blockchain tech can track these contributions and ensure fair compensation through smart contracts.
• Writing: Writers can collaboratively produce works that are continuously updated and expanded upon by the community. This can lead to a living document, a work of literature that is never ‘finished’ but grows and changes, with contributors being rewarded through blockchain mechanisms.
Overall, post-authorship liberates the creative process. It establishes a more democratic and community-driven approach to making and owning, which can lead to greater innovation and diversity in the industries.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
The legal and ethical considerations of post-authorship in Web3 involve getting into tricky intellectual property rights, ensuring data security, maintaining transparency and accountability, and addressing environmental impacts.
These challenges are balanced by the potential for exploration, with Web3 encouraging new ways of creating and sharing content, enabling digital ownership, and facilitating collective management and decision-making. This opens up tons of possibilities for artists, creators, and entrepreneurs to explore alternatives for expression and unity.
WHAT’S N3XT
The implications of post-authorship in the Web3 era are quite deep and far-reaching. Because we run straight to a futur3 where almost everything might be decentralized, the line between creators, consumers, and collaborators is slowly getting erased. Consequently, IP-related issues, privacy, and ethical considerations will require reevaluation to adapt to these new paradigms.
Apart from that, the options are endless with opportunities for emerging styles of artistic expression, economic models, and community governance. Ultimately, post-authorship could redefine our understanding of sovereignty in the new internet age.
