- I'm going to leave some thoughts, given what's unfolded in the past few months.
Firstly, congratulations to the Lens team for crossing the permissionless threshold.
I find that the current meta centers on attention & pretty much nothing else. It's great that our social feeds have actions. It's not so great that our social feeds are more saturated with call-to-action that dilutes productive signal. time will tell if actions are value-creating on the balance, or if it's more immersive value capture.
the points & tipping meta is mundane. the concept of incentivizing the pollination of a meme across all mass media is a great idea. what's not so great is that everyone is sharing the exact same meme (and it's not that interesting if you're not familiar/comfortable with the outsized reward for sharing it further). Proof of Meaningful Work, without a diverse, longtail incentive for all participants, becomes a low-dimension specification game with a side of survivorship bias.
I highly recommend this gitcoin discussion on ephemeral DAOs: <https://gov.gitcoin.co/t/ephemeral-daos-an-underexplored-design-space/18749>
there is an unmet demand for evolutionary complexes that are hardened against already-realized failure modes. not all DAOs have a ragequit/forking/intersubjective mechanism, even when it might benefit the overwhelming majority of DAO constituents.
In gaming news, there's been some controversy around the PSN & Helldivers 2. The decision that resolved this was Steam offering full refunds. Lesson in that.
The other ephemerality that needs to be confronted is our incentive as humans to adapt to changing circumstances. Many social networks are inundated with malicious bots & phishing attacks, web2 especially. However, it's important to note that social networks select for more sophisticated bots, not fewer bots. More humans will have prosthetic agents over time. We cannot expect a hardline anti-bot rhetoric to be futureproof, if anything, we can expect that the culture will shift as adoption grows. Both humans and bots need scale & security, and both benefit from a dynamic filter. Let a million evolutionary niches bloom.
Can't wait to see what the rest of the bull cycle brings.
- How do you feel about things like using paper straws, taking shorter showers, using a manual toothbrush, or using cloth diapers to reduce your carbon footprint, relative to the massive negative impact of the rich, and industries that make these measures feel like a drop in the bucket?
For example 100 companies having been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988, the fashion industry being responsible for ~10% of global carbon emissions (more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined), and politicians and the wealthy flying around on private jets.
You would need over 34 million plastic straws to equal the carbon footprint of a 6-hour round trip on a medium-sized private jet.
To me it feels absolutely pointless when it comes down to it, like literally will just make my life harder while the people who can make an actual difference are just getting filthier rich and continuing to fck over the world…

- Gm guys, wondering if there are any special requirements to get an invite on my profile? @punkess.lens did you get any? 🙃
- team onchain - https://zora.co/collect/eth:0x824ea1d603ac2e5ffa6addf397f8d583a92e8051
maybe we won't mint 10 at a time, and maybe this contest says on-chain is more timely.
but iykyk.
- hello again, Lens.
I keep thinking about the possibility that onchain consumption of time and money should percolate into a general consensus to grow public goods. the Public Goods Network & Universal Impact Pool are a great development in this spirit.
after the recent API drama with Reddit and Twitter, and then the Threadiverse, I wonder what the cost is to maintain a decent enough hub for many niches that don't generalize to the same public goods.
in the end, a lot of the onchain game is pvp. a lot of pvp participants will vociferously claim otherwise. however, in this current disruptive cycle, I don't think we're rivals in a vacuum. I think there's a very significant likelihood that we'll reach consensus or find that new competition is more equipped & ruthless than we can manage, in the next few years.

I'm wondering if there's a way to make a simple add social flow that links arbitrary # of accounts to the same PKP. probably worthwhile to do it through Gitcoin Passport as well.
- In a world of endless dreams, where man has learned to soar,
A mighty fleet of spaceships embarked on a quest for more.
In search of knowledge and new worlds, these humans dared to roam,
And when they found a nebula, they knew they weren't alone.
With engines blazing bright, the worldship led the way,
Through endless voids of emptiness to lands where night becomes day.
As they approached the swirling clouds of gas and dust untold,
They gazed in wonder at the sight, of beauty never seen before.
With instruments and senses keen, they probed the heart of space,
And learned of secrets never known, that whispered in the nebula's embrace.
And now they've returned to tell of all the wonders they've beheld,
With tales of bravery, adventure, and knowledge newly gained.

- just published A Singular Trajectory: https://mirror.xyz/m-j-r.eth/NKOGDH8o5lUgCcW8YBz9MUHTz0cIPmc3He0n_TqhnrY
since there's been so much hype recently around ChatGPT and AI in general since 2020, I decided to concretize my thoughts around what I've read and looking forward in the field of machine learning.
- A lot has happened over the past few months in the @LensProtocol ecosystem.
In this thread I want to highlight some of the projects, updates, and products we or the community has shipped over the past year and also shed some light on what's coming next. 🌿❤️🔥⚡️
For anyone unfamiliar with @LensProtocol - Lens is a protocol, API, and suite of tools that enables developers to easily and quickly build social media applications, or integrate social features like follows, likes, publications, profiles, and encrypted chat.
Since the official launch on Polygon on May 18:
https://twitter.com/LensProtocol/status/1526944792013316097
... there have been around 100 apps that I would consider serious that are being built or that have launched on Lens.
https://www.lens.xyz/apps
There are also many apps integrating Lens social features into existing apps.
This use case will be a popular and growing one this year as it is a low lift and requires minimal work, but with a lot of upside.
Want to parse social posts in your wallet? Lens
Want to add a comments section to your blog? Lens
Already have posts/comments but want to add Collects, linked re-posts, and linked likes to your posts? Lens
Want to add a discussion forum to your site that's token-gated for your DAO? Lens
Want to leverage a user base of x hundreds of thousands (or in the future, x millions) of users without having to bootstrap a network from scratch? Lens!
Like managed services and cloud computing has abstracted away the need to build abd maintain complex back end infrastructure from scratch, Lens abstracts away to the need for developers to build and maintain the infrastructure necessary to implement social features themselves.
Whether or not Lens is built on traditional or decentralized technologies should not matter to the average user or developer.
At the end of the day, many of the features provided by Lens are only made possibly by blockchains and decentralized protocols like Arweave and IPFS, but they should not be at the forefront of the discussion.
Instead, the applications should speak for themselves: the UX and value proposition should be compelling enough on their own for the average internet user or developer to want to use or build on Lens, regardless of the underlying tech stack.
Part of providing a compelling UX is abstracting away the need to know about or understand blockchains and wallets at all.
As of now, this is not part of the average Lens front-end, but is something we'll be considering this year as we move toward scaling Lens to >50,000 TPS and enabling permissionless access to the protocol (both of which are on our somewhat near-term roadmap).
For developers, we plan to double down on providing the best possible DX we can offer for developers.
Last year we made consistent updates and improvements to our docs and API and launched two new SDKS:
Lens React SDK
https://twitter.com/dabit3/status/1606383208089718794
and React Native Lens UI Kit
https://twitter.com/dabit3/status/1600188853297377280
We have a lot of plans for these two libraries, and will also be considering shipping additional products to facilitate and improve the ease of development for devs building on or integrating Lens.
The engineering team led by @wagmi continues to ship new updates to the Lens API at a rapid pace.
You can keep up with the updates by following LensAPI on Lens: @lensapi
A small handful of highlights I will call out that were shipped last year:
- gated publications powered by @LitProtocol
- dispatcher enabling signless transactions
- optimistic UI updates
- feed highlights
- degrees of separation
- profile interests
+ many many others
In November, Lens adopted @xmtplabs to provide secure, private, and encrypted profile-to-profile DMs for the entire Lens ecosystem.
This was huge as it was one of the most requested features from Lens users and the reception has been incredible.
https://twitter.com/xmtp_/status/1588200030820704257
The Lens grants program has deployed funds to over 50 teams building on Lens.
We plan to continue working closely with, and providing support for, certain developers and teams who are building interesting or valuable applications on Lens through our grants program and / or providing engineering support through private channels.
We will be attending, mentoring, participating, and sponsoring strategic events in 2023, including branching out into more traditional "web2" events.
We plan to attend all major @ETHGlobal events, DevCon, & a few other web3 / blockchain events.
We also plan to create small to medium-sized meetup-type events this year in cities around the world starting with Sao Paulo in a couple of weeks.
Here, people can meet others in their community who are using or building on Lens, and also get allow-listed for a profile until permissionless access is enabled for everyone.
There is a lot of hype around web3 social right now:
https://twitter.com/ljin18/status/1610688970173878272
I agree that 2023 will be a huge year for web3 social and for Lens.
We are focused, motivated, and excited to continue building off of the momentum created last year to make 2023 a breakout year for Lens.
There is a lot more happening outside of DevRel, with dedicated teams working with creators (@christina & @bradorbradley) and also other areas of focus like integrations and partnerships.
I have not done a good job highlighting everything else happening in the ecosystem and with the other teams.
If you do want to keep up, follow Lens team members on Lens and on Twitter, starting with:
@christina
@bradorbradley
@fabri
@yoginth
@stani
@paris
@donosonaumczuk
@wagmi
@davidev
@sasicodes
@pealco
That wraps up this overview.
I'm beyond excited and motivated about what we will be working on this year and invite you enjoy the ride with us!

- in today's news, OpenAI is raising more funds on a $29 billion valuation: https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/chatgpt-creator-openai-talks-tender-offer-valuing-company-29-bln-wsj-2023-01-05/
but it feels kinda weird to be throwing money at a recipe that could be crowdsourced further than a single firm. clearly the *prompset* and *labeler pool* are crucial to the reward model. PPO tuning is another thing. ultimately though, they pass their workload through Azure. seems like there's alpha in designing a reward token that can be sustainably valuable to prompters, labelers, and volunteers of compute capacity, while also making it consumable for the interface to the ultimate LLM. imho, $29 billion marketcap for such a token seems awfully low.
- interesting thought experiment: what is the closest stable orbit of a supermassive black hole, how fast would the orbital velocity be, and what amount of time dilation would occur relative to Earth?

- revisiting this: https://lenster.xyz/posts/0x7b-0x0101
what's the deal with Sui? I just looked at the documentation, and it made me wonder. what if there's a way for L2+ rollups to consist of arbitrary operations between the segregated finality of nonoverlapping mempools/state in higher layers? obviously there's the security concerns, and ultimately a zkEVM is still going to have to sequence as is. maybe L3, while not necessarily EVM, can still be an expressive tradeoff of security for scalability without falling for a centralized sequencer risk.
- just saw the reading list drama, and honestly? I kinda vibe with the challenge of following this selection at this cadence: https://lexfridman.com/reading-list/
is there any novel discussion about these books? who knows.
is there any way to digest these books in a timely yet thorough fashion? it's not impossible.
is there anything to learn about ourselves in 2023 relative to pop culture literature? I suspect so.
Orwell's 1984 is seminal. it resonates with contemporary issues like thoughtcrime & echo chambers/pyramid schemes. there's something to be extrapolated from the subject of the room Winston rents, or the items that get rationed, or the propaganda that passes along. there's also concepts to challenge, like the accuracy of Orwell's predicted dystopia vs the future that Aldous Huxley envisioned.
as we develop into a new social network, do we transcend the pitfalls of 1984's dystopia? are we the inner party, the outer party, or the proles?
what do others think?
- AA is a huge deal in cryptography, wondering if anyone else has considered how to implement use cases without EOAs.
for example, @mudgen.lens suggests that different account functions could be deployed once as facets and different upgradeable ERC-4337 implementations could independently adopt them.
https://ethereum-magicians.org/t/erc-4337-account-abstraction-via-entry-point-contract-specification/7160/53
personally, I'm excited to see AA in the lens of reputational staking, e.g. Alice stakes social capital to gain some ability with associated smart wallets. this could unlock use cases in the rollup space, like minting & redeeming smart wallets on L2 (gas-intensive) with 1-of-n "proof of burned&transferred key" commitments from L3.
from this list: https://github.com/0xpass/awesome-account-abstraction
- hot take: I think proper due diligence for DAOs on Ethereum & Polygon should include a filter for funding associations with WAX blockchain or "IBM enterprise blockchain".
and also a filter for the word "phygital".
simply put, leaders in legitimate DAOs shouldn't miss red flags.
- just considered this point that I heard a while ago:
a physical city requires a core with 4 functions: a bank, a school, a market, & a hospital. traditionally, if these 4 are in the same proximity, there's potential for increasing population density. there are also locations that serve multiple functions, like depots are a mix of banks & markets.
I suspect that crypto follows the same logic for mass adoption, and there will be a mobile stack that precedes a cambrian explosion.
we need an opensource mobile operating system that can:
1a) locally exchange private notes (or private keys) representing stable purchasing power
1b) use auth tokens to deposit & withdraw physical items from tamper-evident areas
2a) present a censorship-resistant marketplace for courses that can issue verifiable credentials
2b) coordinate IRL worksites for VC-enabled actors to collaborate
2c) coordinate last-mile areas of operation for VC-enabled actors to deliver goods & services
3) an application on top of 1a-2c that secures a "network bazaar" of goods & services
4) a specialized version of 3 for qualified delivery of medical goods & services
a lot of challenges in this stack. but eventually there will be a UX flow where anyone in the world can order an interface with this "network city" & many areas around the world will naturally form the city-like structures that they're missing from this stack.
- here's an interesting attempt at AI-generated content: \nhttps://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/comments/ztu8na/the_worst_episode_of_the_simpsons_ever_made/\n\nshows the limitations very clearly, but at the same time, it's not hard to imagine this getting further refined.
- The issue with Elon's latest actions is that this time, they are not partisan thoughtcrimes that primarily deeply offend wokes or anything like that. Rather, they go against cross-tribal principles that are a commonly understood bedrock of fair competition. This crosses a new line.
- so there's a contentious argument in the discord about a multisig distributing noncirculating supply of an ostensibly liquid token. most of the largest token holders have a self-interest in the token only be distributed through the open market, or through an OTC deal with a large donor of capital. OTOH, the case being made for nonfinancial distribution of this token is that there is some way for contributors to be incentivized without being given the ability to dump the token via the open market.\n\none proposed solution is to delegate a timelocked version of the token such that, when the timelock expires, the token ownership reverts back to the multisig. it may be just my interpretation, but the idea is to leave the possibility of the multisig swapping the liquid token OTC with a large donor, but delegating any voting power the token might have in the intermediate timeframe beforehand.\n\nI think that ownership in crypto means something else entirely, and distribution of a token as a retroactive reward should be immutable/permissionless. in other words, the solution does need to account for contributors independently holding something with nonfinancial value, that the tokenholders can vote for in their self-interest.\n\nthis is my idea so far: a soulbound merkledrop. the depositor puts the liquid token in a minting contract & generates a merkle tree of recipients who can claim the soulbound analog, which can still be used in voting. this could also be more universal so large tokenholders can distribute their voting power to a list of followers without a financial angle. that being said, I want to steelman this and make it a better idea. how would ragequit work in this setup? how gas-efficient can it be? what could be built on top of merklebound distributions?
- reading this article: https://dark.fi/insights/ftx-where-next.html
I definitely agree with the "Lystrosaurus" angle. tl;dr after the Permian-Triassic extinction event, one small land animal thrived and became the most common because it was extremely versatile.
I would tend to agree, and I suspect that the most antifragile form of web3 development is a standard, extremely audited lightweight mobile app, like scaffoldeth but with ULC infra & signin with lens.
other aspects like the need for "darkfi" is more debatable. I would agree but there's probably a limitation to the network effect there.
what are your thoughts?
