On a beach on the coast of Sierra Leone, West Africa
The wharf is busy with activity. The bright colors of people's boats and clothes, the sounds of trade, the smell of seared fish.
The clamor of fishermen sharing their catch and stories of the sea. I find a man telling his friends about a shark he battled that day.
He lifts his hand to show where the line cut deep into his hand.
“If a nor been for cut am, e been for ker am go!”
"Had I not cut him loose, the shark would have taken him away!"
His friend says.
The other fishermen laugh.
The baiter of sharks shrugs and twirls the the line in his hand, muttering about how he just needed a bigger hook.
It is a stones-throw away that I lens this moment. In stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the wharf is a fisherman between the boats and the sea, on a rock, fast asleep.
I am glad I found him.
And glad he found rest.
