ارنستو چه‌گوارا یک سال پس از پیروزی انقلاب کوبا سکان اقتصاد این کشور را بدست گرفت تا از اساس آن را دگرگون نماید. او به دنبال تحقق یک اقتصاد مارکسیستی ناب بود که در شوروی و کشورهای اروپای شرقی اجرا نشده‌بود. نقطه کانونی تفکر اقتصادی او آفرینش یک انسان جدید بود که از حرص و آز بری بود و به جای جستجوی منافع فردی، خوشبختی را در هدف والای سعادت جمعی جستجو می‌کرد.
چه‌گوارا می‌گفت مهم نیست که یک فرد در سال چند کیلو گوشت مصرف می کند یا صاحب اتومبیل و سفرهای تفریحی هست یا نه، بلکه مهم این است که فرد از لحاظ درونی خود را غنی‌تر حس کند، آگاه‌تر و مسئول‌تر" و علاقه داشت تکرار کند ما سوسیالیست‌ها آزادتریم چون خواسته‌هایمان بهتر برآورده می‌شود و خواسته‌هایمان بهتر برآورده می‌شود چون آزادتریم." چه‌گوارا حتی در زندگی شخصی خود نیز از پول متنفر بود. از داشتن آن احساس بدی به او دست می‌داد و افتخار می‌کرد که چیزی برای همسر و فرزندانش باقی نخواهد گذاشت.
چه‌گوارا یک "نظریه ارزش" مخصوص خود داشت که تا پنج سال پس از انقلاب مورد قبول کاسترو نیز بود. براساس این نظریه "ارزش" اقتصادی و قیمت بر مبنای عرضه و تقاضا مشخص نمی‌شد، بلکه براساس ارزش اخلاقی و اجتماعی کالا یا خدمت تعیین می‌گردید. او زمانی که رئیس بانک مرکزی کوبا بود وظیفه اصلی این بانک را داوری در مورد ارزش نسبی تولیدات مختلف قرار داده بود که می‌بایست براساس ارزش اجتماعی محصول و نه سودی که عاید دولت می‌کرد، تعیین می‌شد.
او معتقد که برای افزایش بازده کارگران باید بر بیدار کردن وجدان و آموزش ایدئوژیک تکیه داشت نه محرک‌های مادی و در مدت کوتاهی باید اقتصاد به مرحله‌ای برسد که کارگران بدون دریافت مزد و برای خیر عمومی کار کنند و دولت هم نیاز‌های آنها را برآورده سازد. بدین‌ترتیب شیطان اصلی یعنی پول هم از میان می‌رود.
سه سال پس از آغاز به کار او دقیقا یک پنجم جمعیت کشور از کوبا فرار کردند. حجم اقتصاد به کمتر از نصف دوران قبل از انقلاب سقوط کرد. صنعت نیشکر کوبا به مرز نابودی کامل رسید و کشور در آستانه قحطی قرار گرفت. کارشناسان شوروی خواهان برکناری چه‌گوارا شدند اما کاسترو ابتدا زیر بار نرفت. در این مدت تنها کمک‌های شوروی بود که کوبا را از قحطی نجات داده بود. زمانی که روس‌ها تهیدید کردند کمک‌های خود را قطع می‌کنند، کاسترو ناچار به برکناری چه‌گوارا و تغییر سیاست گردید. چه‌گوارا سرخورده و خشمگین از کارهای دولتی در کوبا کناره گرفت و برای به راه انداختن انقلاب کمونیستی در کشورهای دیگر ابتدا به کنگو و سپس بولیوی رفت.
