- Reddit signs content licensing deal with AI company ahead of IPO
From Reuters: "**Reddit** has signed a contract allowing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) company to train its models on the social media platform's content, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Reddit, which is eyeing an initial public offering (IPO) launch, has told prospective investors that it signed the deal, worth $ 60 million on an annualized basis, earlier this year, the report said."
"The agreement, signed with an "unnamed large AI company", could be a model for future contracts of a similar nature, Bloomberg reported."

- I have just created LIP-10 proposing a unified standard for creating and managing Communities which allows using them in an interoperable manner across the Lens ecosystem: https://github.com/lens-protocol/LIPs/pull/33
While we have already learned that the right place to discuss LIPs is on Github, here's a TLDR for those who will not bother:
Currently, numerous Lens apps (Phaver, Orb, Lenspeer and soon Hey) each offer different implementations of Communities with significant part of their functionalities isolated within the parent app. This results in fragmented user silos and makes navigating the ecosystem confusing, especially for newcomers, as interoperability levels can differ from app to app in various ways.
Overall, it can be detrimental to growth and adoption rates, especially in the current stage of ecosystem development, where network effects and joint efforts to expand the shared graph are crucial.
Interoperability of current implementations is possible and exists on some limited level. However, it is not sufficient, and increasing it would need active coordination between all involved parties, making it ever harder to maintain as the number of apps grows.
To address all that, a unified standard for creating and managing Communities in a way that allows interoperability between apps is needed. It will ensure apps have a straightforward way to offer their users Communities which are accessible from any other app that supports the same standard.
Apps might still choose to have isolated Communities, however, an option to create interoperable ones is crucial for the ecosystem growth. In the longer run, users will decide which model (app gated or interoperable) will prevail.
Finally, ensuring openness and standardization of such a key functionality goes well in line with Lens philosophy and values.

- Windows 11 - Active on Nearly Half a Billion Devices
From **Windows Central**: "According to my sources who are familiar with the matter, Windows 11 is now in use on **over 400 million monthly active devices**. Internal Microsoft data seen by Windows Central reveals that Windows 11’s active device usage just recently surpassed 400 million and is steadily climbing to reach half a billion by early 2024." "As per Microsoft’s internal metrics, Windows 11 is going strong, despite what people online might suggest. Now, all eyes are on the [2024 release of Windows](https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-moves-to-new-windows-development-cycle-with-major-release-every-three-years-feature-drops-in-between) (which could be [named Windows 12](https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/windows-12-ai-new-ui-features-and-everything-else-we-know-so-far)), which is expected to ship on top of a new version of the Windows platform (codenamed Germanium) and introduce revolutionary [new AI and cloud features](https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/bing-chat).
The upcoming release of **Windows 12** is anticipated to bring an updated desktop interface, as is typical with new Windows versions. According to my sources, [Microsoft's Ignite 2022 keynote](https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/microsoft-accidentally-revealed-a-ui-design-prototype-for-the-next-version-of-windows-at-ignite-2022) revealed a glimpse of a previously unseen UI prototype, reportedly indicating the direction of the Windows 12 interface."

- Croatia wants to turn superhot lake into power plant
From TheNextWeb: "A Croatian energy company has discovered an underwater lake of superheated water that could supply the country’s far north with clean geothermal electricity.
The find was the result of a two-year study by state-run power company Bukotermal that sought to find suitable sites for the exploitation of the energy source, generated by heat from the Earth’s core.
The research verified the presence of a geothermal water source at Lunjkovec – Kutnjak field, located in the Varazdin County, close to the border with Hungary. The underground lake, located at a depth of 2.4 kilometres, has an average temperature of 142.03 degrees Celsius.
Varazdin County confirmed on Tuesday that the site meets all the requirements for the construction of a 16MW geothermal power plant. That’s enough energy to supply tens of thousands of homes."

- Can generative AI solve computer science's greatest unsolved problem?
From ZDNet: "The question -- Does P = NP? -- is a grand theoretical challenge. Scientists took the approach of spoon-feeding ideas to GPT-4 to seek an answer.
In a paper titled 'Large Language Model for Science: A Study on P vs. NP,' lead author Qingxiu Dong and colleagues program OpenAI's [GPT-4](https://www.zdnet.com/article/what-is-gpt-4-heres-everything-you-need-to-know/) large language model using what they call a Socratic Method, several turns of chat via prompt with GPT-4. (The paper was [posted this month on the arXiv pre-print server](https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.05689) by scientists at Microsoft, Peking University, Beihang University in Beijing, and Beijing Technology and Business University.)
Dong and team observe that GPT-4 demonstrates arguments to conclude that P does not, in fact, equal NP. And they claim that the work shows that large language models can do more than spit back vast quantities of text, they can also 'discover novel insights' that may lead to 'scientific discoveries,' a prospect they christen 'LLMs for Science.'"

- Sex in SF Robotaxis
"Ever thought about getting down and dirty in a robotaxi? Want to light up a cig or a joint on the drive home from the club? You’re not alone.
As autonomous vehicles become increasingly popular in San Francisco, some riders are wondering just how far they can push the vehicles’ limits—especially with no front-seat driver or chaperone to discourage them from questionable behavior."
...
"It’s not the first time this creative use of self-driving cars has come up: After Tesla released its autopilot feature nearly a decade ago, CEO Elon Musk went viral for reacting to a Pornhub video of a couple having sex in a Tesla while it was driving on autopilot."

- US Employees on Vacation - More than past 10 years
From WSJ: "There’s a big reason airports and resorts are booked up this summer: Americans are taking off work and vacationing more than they have in over a decade. In some cases, their employers are forcing them to.
The pandemic, along with jitters about a potential recession, dampened U.S. workers’ [eagerness to take paid time off](https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-fret-as-vacation-days-go-unused-11598209200?mod=article_inline) in recent years. - The @aaveaave.lens DAO has successfully launched GHO on the Ethereum Mainnet.
Congrats to the Aave community on this historic moment!
GHO is the manifestation of the ethos of "Internet People" - those who believe in the transformative power of decentralization and the democratization of finance. It's about building a future where everyone can participate with equal access. GHO paves the way for a more transparent, decentralized and efficient financial future.
The beauty lies in its design. Overcollaterized and transparent, it's minted using assets supplied into Aave Protocol V3 as collateral. What sets GHO apart is its commitment to the broader Aave community. The repaid interest on GHO is redirected to the Aave DAO treasury. This supports the sustainability of the protocol and the ongoing development of new features.
GHO's price is pegged to null USD within the Aave Protocol. This design supports stability and utility, helping maintain GHO's peg to the dollar. For those staking AAVE tokens in the Safety Module, a discount on GHO awaits. It's a testament to the belief in rewarding those who contribute to the security and robustness of the Aave ecosystem.
Together, we're not just building a product; we're building a community.

- Eight Teams of Hackers Will Compete to Breach U.S. Satellite in Space
From Newsweek: "This August, at the famed DEFCON hacker convention, the [U.S. military](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/u.s.-military) will stage a contest in which competing teams of white-hat hackers will, for the first time ever, try to penetrate and take over computer systems on a satellite actually in orbit.
It took four years, but "this year, we are in space for real," said Steve Colenzo, Technology Transfer Lead for the Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate in Rome, New York, and one of the contest organizers.
The Hack-A-Sat 4 capture-the-flag contest comes in the wake of the [notorious cyberattack](https://www.airandspaceforces.com/hackers-attacked-satellite-terminals-through-management-network-viasat-officials-say/) on the Viasat KA-SAT European satellite network last year. [Russian military](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/russian-military) hackers [sought to decapitate](https://www.state.gov/attribution-of-russias-malicious-cyber-activity-against-ukraine/) Ukrainian command and control of its armed forces by shutting down the network, just as Russian invaders rolled across the border."

- $930 million in grants to expand internet access to every US home
From AP News: "The massive federal effort to expand [internet access](https://apnews.com/hub/broadband-internet) to every home in the U.S. took a major step forward on Friday with the announcement of $930 million in grants to shore up connections in remote parts of Alaska, rural Texas and dozens of other places where significant gaps in connectivity persist.
The so-called middle mile grants, announced by the Department of Commerce, are meant to create large-scale networks that will enable retail broadband providers to link subscribers to the internet. Department officials likened the role of the middle mile — the midsection of the infrastructure necessary to enable internet access, composed of high-capacity fiber lines carrying huge amounts of data at very high speeds — to how the interstate highway system forged connections between communities."

- OpenAI Won't Compete with Devs Beyond ChatGPT
From Business Insider: "Sam Altman, the erudite cofounder and chief executive of OpenAI, has a message for software developers that should set them at ease: The company has no plans to roll out any more consumer-facing products like ChatGPT, according to a now taken-down blog post by a startup founder who attended a private meeting with Altman.
Altman has been on a world tour to allay people's [worst fears about artificial intelligence](https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-openai-chatgpt-worldcoin-helion-future-tech-2023-4) and to hear from developers and users of OpenAI's product. On a stop in London in May, he met behind closed doors with a small group of developers and startup founders, giving them a sneak peek at OpenAI's roadmap and biggest challenges.
Yet the conversation became public when Raza Habib, an attendee who is also the cofounder and CEO of Humanloop, a Y Combinator-backed startup that helps businesses build apps on top of large language models, blogged an account of the private meeting. The original blog post has since been taken down, but that hasn't stopped people from passing around a [copy](https://web.archive.org/web/20230601000258/https://website-nm4keew22-humanloopml.vercel.app/blog/openai-plans) on an internet-archiving site. - Amazon Is in Talks To Offer Free Mobile Service To US Prime Members
**From Bloomberg:** Amazon has been talking with wireless carriers about offering low-cost or possibly free nationwide mobile phone service to Prime subscribers, according to people familiar with the situation.
The company is negotiating with Verizon Communications Inc., T-Mobile US Inc. and Dish Network Corp. to get the lowest possible wholesale prices. That would let it offer Prime members wireless plans for $10 a month or possibly for free and bolster loyalty among its biggest spending customers, the people said, who requested anonymity to discuss a private matter.
The talks have been going on for six to eight weeks and have also included AT\&T Inc. at times, but the plan may take several more months to launch and could be scrapped, one person said.
