- The Jam Minaret, Afghanistan 🇦🇫
It still feels unreal to have witnessed it with my own eyes. The journey to reach it is so arduous, and even if it were in a less perilous land, the path itself might deter most tourists. There's no official count, but from the information we gathered, barely a few hundred people who aren't from Afghanistan have made it to the minaret. Perhaps even fewer than those few hundred Afghans who don't reside nearby.
Standing at 65 meters tall, dating back to the 12th century, the Jam Minaret is the second tallest ancient minaret in the entire world, right after the one in India. It's under the protective umbrella of UNESCO, and as we approached it, we found the tents of United Nations personnel who watch over its well-being. Having been neglected for centuries, it has begun to lean to one side, and the question lingers on how long it will stand in such a state. It's constructed from bricks inscribed with verses from the Quran.
Currently guarded by the Taliban, who surprisingly displayed more curiosity and friendliness than expected upon our arrival. So, while this region was once perilous territory for foreigners, today it's as accessible as any other location in Afghanistan.

The average Afghan earns $50-60 per month. With the Taliban taking over, foreign companies left the country, and people were left without jobs. Even those who worked in government institutions and supported the previous government either left or got dismissed. Some of our guides were among them. Seeking a decent life, they turned to new professions. We are a large group, and we must never move alone. When traveling to such countries, a question always arises: Who benefits from tourist money? The government or ordinary people? Likely, both. But for the locals, it's not just about the money; having tourists around brings more than financial benefits. Many see a foreigner for the first time, have conversations, and get a glimpse that there's another world out there. I hope that more tourists coming to Afghanistan will make life easier for its residents. It's evident they love tourists, and when asked why, they say you give us hope for a better tomorrow.
Inevitably, even the Taliban (distinct from other Afghans) want to send a positive image to the world. Wherever we went after Kabul and asked for permits to move around, a journalist team magically appeared. The same questions over and over: Do you feel safe? What's your message to our government and the world? You can imagine we had to swallow certain statements.
And as if our words were more valuable than money, we paid them for permits. After the interview, they handed us signed papers. And when, in the midst of the interview, they fired a Kalashnikov saying, "Just for fun, you know what is fun?" No one seemed to react… (based on a true event)
Besides the first gunshot from the Kalashnikov, the people making mosaics inside the Grand Mosque in Herat will stay deeply in my memories. With skillful hands, they create beautiful shapes from stones. As a token of appreciation for our visit, we all received a piece to keep as a memento. When we asked the master how much it all costs and how much he can earn… His answer was, "We don't do it for money, but to preserve the tradition." Of course, we couldn't accept that as an answer, so we voluntarily paid for new souvenirs.
Day after day in Afghanistan; each one brings a new lesson 🙏🏽
