- 1Q23 Gross Profit/Operating Profit/Net Profit on Sales Both YoY Increase, QoQ Increase for 3rd Quarter in a row

- Tesla Inc TSLA.US: 1Q23 Review: Focus on Volume Expansion and Cost Reduction
[Hana Securities Automotive Analyst Song Sunjae]
■1Q23 Performance: Sales +36% (YoY), Sales +24% (YoY)
Q1 sales were 42.3 million (+36% (YoY) units, compared with 41.2 million (+40%) units of Model 3/Y and 1.1 million units of Model S/X (-27%) units. Production in the first quarter was 44.1 million (+44% (YoY), of which 42.1 million (+45%) were Model 3/Y and 1.9 million (+37%) were Model S/X. ASP fell 12% year-on-year and 11% quarter-on-quarter.
Q1 REVENUE/OPERATIVE EARNINGS/ NET PROFIT OF $23.3 BILLION (+24% (YoY))/$26.6 BILLION (-26%)/$25.1 BILLION (-24%) and OPERATIVE PROFIT OF 11.4% (-7.8%p (YoY) and -4.6%p (Q) respectively. Of the $20 billion in automobile sales, regulatory credit income was $520 million (-23% (YoY)) and the gross margin of sales of automobiles alone fell to 21.1% (-11.8%p (YoY), -4.8%p (QoQ). Although the increase in volume was positive, ASP decline (-12% (YoY), -11% (QoQ) due to price cuts, rising raw material/logistics costs, and 4680 battery cell production-related costs negatively affected profitability. For the quarter, the EPS was $0.73 (-23% (YoY), compared to $0.85 by no-GAAP. Market expectations were $0.83).
■Conference Call Key: Focus on Volume Expansion
① Focus on volume expansion for the time being: It said it plans to focus on strengthening market dominance through volume expansion rather than maintaining high margins with small output. Tesla aims to strengthen its status as a Cost Leader while rivals struggle to produce EVs. In the long run, it is designed to increase profitability per unit of the life cycle of Tesla vehicles through autonomous driving, charging, connectivity, and services.
② The decline in profitability was a manageable level: "Although regional price cuts were made during the first quarter, the operating margin fell to a manageable level," it said. It said it expects to continue to reduce costs, improve productivity, and reduce logistics costs, and will focus on operating leverage effects through economies of scale.
③ Production status by plant: Cybertruck has installed production equipment in its Austin plant during the first quarter, and preparations are underway for production in the second half of the year. It is expected to play a role as an export hub in the future, such as producing export models for Thailand at its Shanghai plant. Model Y production at the Berlin plant exceeded 5,000 units per week.
④ FSD Beta's Driving Range Surge: FSD Beta's cumulative driving range exceeded 130 million miles at the end of March, and nearly 150 million miles as of April, it said. Given that it was 35 million miles at the end of the second quarter of last year, an additional 100 million miles was added in three quarters. The large-scale data collected here is expected to be essential for AI-based autonomous driving technology.
■ Implications: The number of sales should continue to expand to achieve the vision
For the vision of platforming automobiles, it is important to mass supply of electric vehicles and to decrease production costs for this. For the trending upward momentum of stock prices, it is time to confirm the increase in sales without further decline in profitability.

- (2023.04.25) EU Market Middle Day & Futures / Yuanta Securities Overseas Investment Strategy Team
The European stock market today raised market concerns about the economic recession, citing the need for further rate hikes by European Central Bank (ECB) lawmakers. As a result, the STOXX600 index, a pan-European index, fell 0.4% to the 467.1 level, and all three major European indexes, including the UK FTSE index and Germany's DAX index, are sluggish. According to Oppenheimer, a global financial services company, stock market volatility is expected to be significant due to the combination of the U.S. Open Market Committee (FOMC) and companies' earnings season scheduled for next week. In particular, IT giants are scheduled to announce their earnings this week, and the possibility of an additional rate hike is rising as inflation is not fully caught. On the other hand, as the rate hike is expected to be the last increase, some diagnose that the U.S. stock market is currently at the end of the bear market, raising the need to establish an investment position based on undervalued valuation stocks.
In the international oil market today, a surge in demand for large-scale travel following China's Labor Day holiday has led to an influx of buying due to an increase in mid- to long-distance passenger transportation. As a result, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brant Oil for June delivery recorded $78.8 and $82.9 per barrel, respectively, somewhat limiting the previous fall. The announcement of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) plan to cut additional production also adds pressure on oil prices to rise.

- [Hana Securities/Chemical/Yoon Jae-sung] Weekly Monitor: India, the next China
[Overall review]
▶ The recent recovery in demand in China is centered on consumer goods-related chemicals. In particular, India's rapid growth needs to be taken into account in this recovery cycle. Top Picks are LG Chem, Kumho Petroleum, Hyosung TNC, and Hyosung Advanced.
[India, the next China]
▶ India fuel demand hits record high in March. India's refining facility utilization rate is over 100%. India's auto sales grow FY23 YoY +26% to record high. India's Tata Motor FY23 passenger car sales up YoY +45%. Audi India 1Q23 Automotive Sales Grow YoY +126%
▶ Indian PM Modi sets 10 trillion rupees ($122bil) higher by YoY +33% at Capex, including construction of FY24 roads, railways and other infrastructure. That's 22% of India's total spending, the largest in history
▶ Global companies are also accelerating their entry into India. China's first Apple Store opened in July 2008, and 15 years later, in April 2023, it opened its first Apple Store in Mumbai, India. Taiwan's Foxconn also recently announced the construction of additional factories and significant expansion of manpower
▶ India's urbanization rate is 35%, which is the same as China's 23 years ago, fuel demand is similar to China 20 years ago, and cumulative car sales per capita is similar to China 15 years ago. Given past cases of rapid growth in GDP per capita, aggressive infrastructure expansion, and its role as a manufacturing base to replace China in the future, when urbanization rates in developing countries begin to exceed 35%, the increase in chemical demand is clear
▶ On the other hand, India's ethylene facilities are about 8 million tons, significantly lower than Korea's 12 million tons and China's 51 million tons. In particular, downstream is significantly lacking. SBR accounts for only 20% of China's and ABS only 3% of China's, and PVC is also insufficient, making it the world's largest importer. For your information, there are only two ABS/SBR producers. Facilities such as spandex, tire cord, etc. are also minimal
▶ Conclusion: India's petrochemical demand explosion is approaching. Attention needs to be paid to domestic petrochemical companies that 1) have factories in India or 2) benefit from a surge in Indian imports as a global No.1 downstream/specialty company

- [Global ETF] ETF Trends & Portfolio: Blackout
▶ Hana Global ETF / FI Park Seung-jin (T.3771-7761)
- Among the supply and demand advantages of bond-type ETFs, the global ETF market continues to expand. As interest rates rose, low-priced buying flowed into the bond-type ETF market, while funds leaked from the North American stock ETF market for the first time in four weeks amid companies' earnings announcements. Meanwhile, China-related expectations for stronger-than-expected economic recovery due to the reopening effect led to a +1.66 billion inflow of funds into the emerging Asian equity ETF market
- Looking at the weekly flow of money inflows and outflows of U.S.-listed ETF stocks, it reflects investor sentiment to increase stability amid the upward revision of the expected path of monetary policy. Amid rebound in interest rates and earnings expectations, financial ETF XLF inflows +6.03 bln and VOO/IVV total +1.13 bln, while essential consumer ETF XLP and healthcare ETF XLV are also on the money inflow list
- In the bond-type ETF stock group, a total inflow of +null.02 billion to TLT, a long-term government bond ETF, and +9.9 billion to HYG/JNK, a high-yield ETF, reflecting even interest in the overall bond-type ETF due to rising interest rates
- Entering a blackout period where Fed figures' comments are restricted ahead of next week's FOMC, with major companies reporting their first-quarter earnings. Limited index fluctuations are expected amid weakening earnings momentum. With the possibility of an additional 25bp policy rate hike already firmly recognized, the degree of PCE to be announced later in the week will be an economic indicator that could affect the market
- The fact that the available fiscal capacity of the Treasury Department is likely to be exhausted in June due to the confrontation between the Democratic/Republican parties and less-than-expected tax revenues is also expected to be a factor of future market pressure. Need to maintain a portfolio structure focused on quality and stability. ETFs include XLV, XLK, KBWB with a high proportion of large caps in the healthcare, tech and banking sectors, BTAL in response to volatility, and ASHR with a high proportion of mainland China

- In the fourth week of April, electricity prices in the three major European countries (UK, Germany and France) averaged 145.3 euros/MWh, down -0.3%. The average power price for April was 148.0 euros/MWh, up 7.3% from MoM.
▶ Investment Strategy: Price Attractive Enterprise Screening Approach
- Investor sentiment was dampened by Tesla's 1Q23 earnings consensus, but global electric vehicle sales data, the most important indicator, is good (March U.S. YoY +38%, China YoY +22%, and three European countries (Germany/France/UK combined) YoY +14%).
- In the case of battery cell makers, which presented conservative guidance at the beginning of the year, it is recommended to increase their share in that they can raise their earnings estimates due to rising exchange rates and AMPC effects.
- For material companies, lithium carbonate prices have recently fallen from a high of 582 yuan/kg ($84/kg) in 2022 to 161 yuan/kg ($23/kg), while for cathode materials and lithium-related companies, it is difficult to expect a performance surprise from the lagging effect throughout 2022. Nevertheless, most companies are located at the top of the P/E band based on higher performance estimates, so they believe that there is limited room for further gains. It recommends selective access to companies with price attractiveness.

The recurrence is starting in three months, and the number doesn't seem to be high yet. Accordingly, Chinese experts say that the symptoms of secondary infection are mild.
But ahead of the May 1 Labor Day holiday, the stock market reflects increased infections.
