**Web3 Social Front-ends: A glimpse into the future**
There are already 8 front-end applications created on top of Lens Protocol. All of them are still in beta and early stages of development but are growing fast driven by visionary entrepreneurs and developers.

If you are considering or currently developing a social front-end on top of Lens Protocol allow me to share a couple of insights with you.
**Low Switching Costs**
In social media today we are not the owners of our identities (profiles), content nor social graph (connections). The friction from switching or leaving is too high. We are locked into centralized servers while being farmed for our information.
In web3 social users and creators have ownership and portability so it is effortless to switch, alternate or leave applications. This means it's **easy to onboard new users but also easy to lose them**. Retention will be challenging.
**Competitive landscape**
Developers can create applications at record speeds because all backend infrastructure, main logic and network effects are at a protocol level. We are seeing this already with more than 1 social media app application per month emerging, and this is just the start.
**Experience is King**
The best way to maintain users will be to provide excellent front-end experiences. This means fast loading times, smooth navigation, innovative tool, composability, optimistic UX, cultural localization, great design and curated content & feeds.
**Business models**
In web3 social the model is simple: To enable an open economy and charge fees from it. Essentially, a digital real state tax on premium follows, tipping, NFT minting, premium features, in-app purchases and maybe some day advertising revenue sharing. This is how a true digital capitalist society should be.
**Creator onboarding**
Providing high quality exclusive content will be an engine for growth aside from traditional marketing spend. Exclusive deals with creators will be a great competitive advantage. Similar to what we are seeing in trademarked Music and Video platforms. E.g. the Joe Rogan Spotify deal or the content wars between Netflix vs. Amazon vs. Apple vs. Disney.
**Think mobile**
The potential market of social media is billions of users. Targeting the masses is going to require a new approach on how we build web3 applications. Eventually, no one will be talking about wallets, blockchains, or transactions per second. That’s why we are pioneering gas-less mobile experiences.
**Micro communities**
Web2 social is a winner takes all zero-sum game. Web3 social is a positive sum game. Because of composability micro-communities aka niches can now be served in better ways if one can solve their specific needs and wants.
**Flexibility**
The openness of web3 and fast rate of digital adoption will foster innovation at an unprecedented rate. This means applications will need to adapt fast. Can't wait to see which new primitives will emerge from Lens Protocol ecosystem. We are still early.
**Decentralized Governance**
As we have seen, Ce-Social has been responsible for influencing elections and manipulating media. On lens Protocol content will be moderated via DAO’s like CultivatorDAO. We will have a say on what our society consumes via a democratized system. Front-ends will be able to opt in or out from algorithms middleware and be liable for what they show on their feeds. The whole stack will be open source and transparent.
**Optimize for value**
Since the business models won’t be farming users data frontends don’t need to optimize for maximizing engagement through addictive algorithms. Focus on providing high-quality value instead.
**Conclusion**
Cookies are coming to an end. People are waking up. The culture shift already started. Better digital networks are coming.
Even Elon Musk is acknowledging this as he is pushing for new business models (blue tick), tools for creators, privacy features & decentralized governance.
This is how the future of social may look like and is exciting to be at the beginning of it.

- Great content on monetization @stani.lens , thanks. Could you embed fractional digital assets too? How could that be built if it's not baked into the protocol?
