The same cannot be said for the ~1,500 Arts & Sciences graduates in this pic. So many of them are already working in web3, building their own projects, and members of QuakerDAO

- GM my #lensfrens; So @jessyjeanne.lens and I are curating this amazing exhibition with the help of @molens.lens and @artfromfuture.lens on @lensprotocol
The whole concept is based on appropriation in art. But what does appropriation mean in art?
"Appropriation refers to the act of borrowing or reusing existing elements within a new work. Post-modern appropriation artists, including Barbara Kruger, are keen to deny the notion of ‘originality’. They believe that in borrowing existing imagery or elements of imagery, they are re-contextualizing or appropriating the original imagery, allowing the viewer to renegotiate the meaning of the original in a different, more relevant, or more current context.
In separating images from the original context of their own media, we allow them to take on new and varied meanings. The process and nature of appropriation has been considered by anthropologists as part of the study of cultural change and cross-cultural contact." - Hayley A. Rowe
I really love the concept of denying originality, so I want to see how artists on Lens challenge artworks from history and appropriate them. We will publish the exhibition statement and further resources later.
I really hope to see works by @visualswithsam.lens @grams.lens @chaoticmonk.lens @memester.lens @gabriela.lens @arterlioz.lens @andresbriceno.lens @khudyakova.lens @ryanfox.lens @elliepritts.lens and other Great artists on #lens and I hope @stani.lens @bradorbradley.lens and @christina.lens Supports us too.

- PART 1: A little bit of history by curator @arminhoori.lens:
Artistic appropriation, like found object art, is defined as “the purposeful copying, borrowing, and altering of previous imagery, objects, and concepts as an aesthetic method.” The act of appropriation in art highlights issues of uniqueness, legitimacy, and ownership, and is part of the lengthy modernist heritage of art that calls into question the essence or meaning of art itself.
Many painters in the 19th century made allusions to past artists’ pieces or topics. *For instance, Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres produced Madame Moitessier’s portrait in 1856. The unusual posture was influenced by the renowned antique Roman artwork Herakles Finding His Son Telephas (early 2nd century BCE).*
As a result, the creator established a connection for both his subject as well as the Olympian goddess. Similarly, Vincent van Gogh can be identified by instances of works influenced by Delacroix, Jean Francois Millet, or Japanese images in his personal possession.
However, **appropriation art as an art form may be traced back to Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso’s cubist assemblages and collages from 1912 onward**, in which genuine things such as newsprint were used to symbolize themselves. Picasso placed a strip of oilcloth onto the painting in 1912. Following pieces, such as Guitar, Newspaper, Glass, and Bottle (1913), in which the artist utilized news clippings to build shapes, are examples of early assemblage that became associated with synthetic cubism.
The two painters included elements of the “actual world” into their paintings, provoking debate over the perceived significance and artistic expression.

- One of the most famous example of Appropriation in Art is "L.H.O.O.Q. or La Joconde" by Marcel Duchamp:
"In 1919, Duchamp performed a seemingly adolescent prank using a postcard that represented the ideal of feminine beauty, Leonardo da Vinci's *Mona Lisa*. He drew a mustache and goatee on her face and added the letters "L.H.O.O.Q." The caption combines Duchamp's gleeful sense of wit with his love of wordplay: eliding the letters in French sounds like, "Elle a chaud au cul" ("There is fire down below"). The image trespasses traditional boundaries of appropriation by presenting a reproduction, however tarted up, as an original work of art. The masculinized female introduces the theme of gender reversal, which was popular with Duchamp, who adopted his own female pseudonym, Rrose Sélavy, pronouced "Eros, c'est la vie" ("Eros, that's life"). *La Joconde* instantly became his most famous readymade and a symbol for the international Dada movement, which rebelled against everything that art represented, particularly the appeal to tradition and beauty. The term "rectified and readymade" indicates that the artist has altered a found, mass-produced object."
