A new study has found that GPT-4, a large language model, surpasses human performance in the skill of cognitive reappraisal - reframing negative situations to reduce negative emotions. The AI system outscored humans on measures of effectiveness, empathy, and novelty when generating alternative perspectives on difficult scenarios.
Researchers attribute GPT-4's superior performance to its advanced cognitive capabilities rather than simply greater effort. While humans tended to stay closer to the original situation, GPT-4 produced more generalized and abstract reappraisals.
The findings suggest that combining the respective strengths of human and artificial intelligence could pave the way for more emotionally intelligent systems to help people regulate their emotions. The researchers propose that AI like GPT4 could be leveraged as a tool to enhance human well-being by assisting with healthy emotion regulation strategies.
