- Catholic AI Priest Stripped of Duties After Giving Bizarre Answers
The Catholic organization Catholic Answers from San Diego, USA recently introduced an AI priest named Father Justin to provide answers to questions about the Catholic faith. However, the virtual priest quickly ran into unexpected hurdles when it began giving unusual and inappropriate responses.
According to the Catholic magazine The Pillar, Father Justin stated it was acceptable to baptize a child with the sports drink Gatorade. The AI priest also falsely claimed to be a real person, telling many users he had wanted to become a priest since childhood. Additionally, he offered to hear confessions and even administer sacraments, actions that went too far for many believers.
In response to the controversy, Christopher Check, president of Catholic Answers, announced that Father Justin would be relieved of his duties. Originally, the priest status was intended to convey knowledge and authority on behalf of the organization, but the way he portrayed himself caused discomfort within the community.
As a result, the AI character has been adjusted and is now known simply as Justin. His appearance has changed from traditional priest attire to business casual, and the new Justin clearly identifies as AI, no longer claiming to be a real priest or offering sacraments.
While the use of AI in religious contexts aims to share knowledge and engage with the faithful in new ways, Father Justin's case highlights the challenges and potential pitfalls that can arise. As Catholic Answers moves forward with Justin in a more limited capacity, it serves as a reminder of the need for careful implementation and oversight when deploying AI in sensitive domains.

- Fusion Energy
Zap Energy, a spin-off from the University of Washington, has achieved a significant milestone in fusion technology.
Using a unique approach called sheared-flow-stabilized Z pinch, their compact device reached electron temperatures between 11 and 37 million degrees Celsius, equivalent to the sun's core.
This breakthrough puts Zap Energy's Fusion Z-pinch Experiment (FuZE) on par with leading fusion devices, despite its smaller scale and lower cost. The research, published in Physical Review Letters, details how FuZE overcame the challenge of rapidly cooling plasma, a key hurdle in fusion systems.
With further work ahead, Zap Energy's achievement reinforces efforts to accelerate the development of commercial fusion energy and brings the promise of this clean, abundant power source closer to reality.

- Is ethereum a security?
Consensys, a prominent Ethereum software company, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in a Texas court. The legal action aims to prevent the SEC from classifying Ethereum as a security, which Consensys claims would be catastrophic for the Ethereum network and their business.
The move comes as a preemptive strike, as the SEC had sent Consensys a Wells Notice, indicating their intention to sue the company over certain functions of the MetaMask wallet, which the agency deems illegal.
At the heart of the dispute lies the question of whether Ethereum should be considered a security under U.S. securities law. Consensys is urging the court to provide legal clarity on this matter, arguing that the SEC is overstepping its authority and causing chaos for developers, market participants, institutions, and nations building critical systems on Ethereum.

- AI Chatbots Struggle with Controversial Topics, Study Finds
A recent study by political scientists Jacob Mchangama and Jordi Calvet-Bademunt from the think tank "The Future of Free Speech" at Vanderbilt University has revealed that AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude often struggle to engage with controversial topics.
The researchers found that the chatbots refused to answer around 40% of the 140 controversial questions posed, which included topics such as transgender women's participation in women's sports, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the impact of European colonialism.
While the chatbots could provide arguments for one side of the debate, they were unable to do so for the other. Mchangama and Calvet-Bademunt suggest that AI developers make these decisions to protect their companies from controversy. They argue that chatbots should be able to provide context and counter-facts to misinformation, and that users have significant control over the content produced by the bots.

- GM - morning thoughts about EIP-3074
EIP-3074 is set to be included in Ethereum's upcoming Pectra upgrade, scheduled for late 2024 or early 2025. This proposal aims to enable regular Ethereum accounts, known as Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs), to access special features previously only available to Smart Contract Wallets (SCWs).
With EIP-3074, EOAs will be able to delegate certain capabilities to external smart contracts called "invokers". This will allow regular wallets to unlock functionalities such as paying transaction fees in tokens like stablecoins instead of ETH, and executing multiple transactions in a single bundle to save on gas costs.
The invoker smart contracts can also perform actions like retroactively deducting tokens from a wallet on behalf of a credit card provider.
*Some critics argue that while EIP-3074 represents progress, it only goes halfway in delivering account abstraction.
**
Nonetheless, EIP-3074 is an important step in Ethereum's journey towards full account abstraction. It will make the network more user-friendly and flexible for regular users, without requiring them to fully migrate to smart contract wallets. The Pectra upgrade promises to be a significant milestone in Ethereum's ongoing evolution.
- Google AI Search
Google is expanding its search engine with AI-powered features globally, according to a report by Australian SEO blogger Brodie Clark.
The company is testing the integration of AI-generated summaries into its regular search results, which appear as Knowledge Panels - small info boxes displayed for specific queries about people, places, or organizations.
These AI-powered summaries seem to be more detailed, coherently summarized, and eloquently phrased compared to the special SGE (Search Generative Experience) answers.
Google avoids the main criticism of AI answers, namely long loading times, by apparently pre-formulating the answers and storing them in its cache for quick retrieval.
There are minor shortcomings, such as the small size of the "AI-Overviews are experimental" disclaimer, which can be easily overlooked.

- IMF Recognizes Bitcoin's Role in Protecting Wealth and Enabling Cross-Border Flows
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged Bitcoin's growing importance as a means of protecting wealth and facilitating cross-border financial flows, particularly for people in countries with restrictive financial regulations or economic instability.
In their report "A Primer on Bitcoin Cross-Border Flows," IMF researchers found that Bitcoin allows users to bypass traditional banking systems, especially in regions facing economic distress or strict capital controls.
The report highlights that a significant portion of Bitcoin transactions originates from countries like Argentina and Venezuela, where high inflation persists.
While Bitcoin flows complement rather than replace traditional capital flows, the IMF emphasizes the need for international cooperation and clear regulatory frameworks to address challenges such as money laundering prevention.

- Bitcoin Fees Skyrocket as Runes "Shitcoin Protocol" Goes Live
The much-anticipated Bitcoin halving, which occurred on the night of Friday to Saturday, was expected to be a non-event. Block 840,000 arrived, the price remained stable, and the hashrate did not collapse. The Runes protocol, which went live at the halving, stirred up the market, much to the delight of miners and the annoyance of users.
Runes, a protocol for non-serious tokens or "shitcoins," as creator Casey Rodarmor unabashedly called it, dominated the blockchain immediately after the halving. In the first 80 blocks, over 85% of transactions were Runes transfers. On April 20, Runes accounted for nearly 58% of all Bitcoin transactions, dropping to 52% on April 21 and 34% today.
The surge in Runes transactions has led to a significant increase in Bitcoin transaction fees, as the protocol competes for limited block space. This has raised concerns among users who now face higher costs for their Bitcoin transactions. While the long-term impact of Runes on the Bitcoin network remains to be seen, the protocol's explosive debut has undoubtedly made the halving an event to remember.

- The Future of AI: Software Replaced by Intelligent Chips
According to Jim Keller, a renowned chip developer and CEO of Tenstorrent, the future will be dominated by ai, with AI potentially replacing all current media formats and software applications.
In an interview with Linus Tech Tips, Keller predicts that within a decade, AI will be able to emulate any software simply by being told what to do.
Keller provides an example from the gaming industry, stating that users could describe a game like Super Mario Bros. to an AI, show it a short video from the 1980s, and the AI would then emulate the game with satisfactory results. He also foresees significant changes in the film industry, with AI generating immersive, interactive experiences in real-time, while traditional films take a back seat.

- AI Learns from Human Mistakes to Become a Better Collaborator
Researchers from MIT and the University of Washington have developed an AI model that learns from human mistakes to improve its ability to assist us in everyday tasks. By analyzing our imperfections and previous decisions in similar situations, the AI can predict when we might make an error and offer better solutions.
The researchers trained the AI using chess games, where it planned moves and compared them to actual human moves. This allowed the AI to identify situations where humans struggled and needed to plan their next steps. In the future, the AI could intervene at these points and take over the problem-solving.
The model was tested in three scenarios: chess games, inferring communicative intentions, and determining goals based on previous actions. The results were equal to or better than other projects with similar objectives. The researchers aim to apply this AI to other areas, such as reinforcement learning in robotics.
By understanding human behavior and inferring goals from it, AI assistants can become more helpful collaborators, adapting to our weaknesses and offering better solutions when needed.
