In the below, we explore the concept of NFT Utilities.
As we know, 2021 saw a surge in NFTs, with even 300+ large Web2 brands launching NFT collections - and this number keeps growing every day! A noticeable example here is Nike, who just announced their Web3 platform ‘.Swoosh’ in mid-November 2022.
So far, NFTs have mostly been speculative assets, but now brands, communities, and other content creators are exploring what they can do with these NFTs after issuance. In other words, they explore post-mint experiences. Platforms like Tropee.com offer allow content creators, influencers, and brands to create ‘NFT utilities’ that NFT holders can claim.
‘NFT Utilities’ are gifts/benefits/perks that can be created by content creators and distributed to their communities (i.e. NFT holders) e.g., Nike can issue a collection of 10K NFTs and then decide that all NFT holders will have access to a 10% discount on NIKE products, invite them to the annual NIKE Summit, or to co-create new shoes.
While some platforms already have a library of NFT Utilities (cf. illustration below), it is still early days and content creators will come up with many new types of utilities for their communities.
On Lens specifically, we have two main types of NFTs:
1. Follower NFT
2. Collect NFT
Content creators can therefore leverage NFT Utilities in at least two ways:
1. Create NFT Utilities that their followers can claim (good for utilities that target a large audience, like a newsletter, a gated Telegram chat, an AMA session, an airdrop, or tickets for a large event)
2. Make some posts, add a Fee Collect, and those who collected the post can claim the utilities (good for more targeted utilities, like merchandise, ticket for a small private event, or a 1-1 call)
The integration with guild.xyz is a great example of NFT Utilities: only NFT holders can access some channels such as Telegram or Discord! It goes even further: roles can be assigned based on NFTs held like Follow, Collect (and also Web2 stuff e.g., being a member of the Discord). We could imagine having the same for Githubs, shared documents, etc. You can visit our https://guild.xyz/molens to look at an example of an NFT-gated community on Lens.
