- 📍**Georgetown, Guyana** 🇬🇾
Georgetown is yet another capital city that until yesterday, I barely knew existed. When you travel a lot, you begin to understand why some places are touristy while others are not. In most lesser-known destinations, there's truly nothing particularly special to see.
You don't visit such places to boast that you've been there. Nor do you go to snap a photo with some building seen a thousand times before. You go for a new experience and a glimpse into a completely different way of life.
And in Georgetown, life is indeed different. The city isn't one of the safest. The crime rate is very high, thanks to corrupt cops and a government nobody relies on. You'd think everyone would want to flee Guyana because of this, but it's not the case. People often return with great longing after a few years abroad. They say here, no one questions you. You don't pay taxes. In America, for example, if you're late for work, you're fired. Here, you work when and how much you want.
A taxi driver told us what seemed like a joke at first. He said Guyana is the only country in the world where you can do nothing for 7 days and not go hungry. Everyone has relatives, friends, who will share at least one meal a day with those in need. In the end, it turned out to be not just a joke but a true story.
In the photos, you see people on the streets, but that's because they were taken in and around Stabroek Market. Beyond that, people don't walk at all! There are no sidewalks. The only pedestrian path outside the market is the path between 2 lanes for cars, with a sign that reads "Let's Walk Together Against Corruption" 🤦🏽♀️ Quite absurd, in every sense...
If anyone ever wishes or happens to find themselves in Georgetown, here's what you could visit as a tourist for an afternoon:
🇬🇾 Wooden Cathedral of St. George
🇬🇾 Stabroek Market
🇬🇾 Promenade Gardens
🇬🇾 Parliament Building, whose courtyard is open to the public and very welcoming
We arrived in Georgetown on Valentine's Day, and I've never seen such madness anywhere else. Flower shops were overflowing, streets full of gift vendors, and there wasn't a man without something for his significant other in hand. That may have been the loveliest impression from Georgetown for the first day ☺️🌹💒
