- Attended a talk by Brad Lightcap, the COO of OpenAI, yesterday at #CannesLions23, open-sourcing some of my notes from his talk for y'all to enjoy and my thoughts on them:
- OpenAI is focused on how to incorporate language/culture/history/values to make GPT and other models feel localized and authentic to everyone no matter who you are or where you're from
- they take a bottoms-up approach to product improvements, doing focus groups with specific groups and communities and listening to them
- when asked how he would describe chatGPT to a newbie he said, "ChatGPT is a language model trained for dialogue” (i thought this was interesting and paid close attention to his word choice because i have heard so many people explain it differently and usually in more words)
- he categorized GPT use cases into 2 buckets: 1) the "blank slate" to help you start, and 2) refining and expanding on existing ideas
- given focus on brands at Cannes Lions, he mentioned that it is now possible for a user to "have a dialogue with a brand" in a very literal sense. This is a big deal!
My takeaways: while this was a fairly high-level wide-appeal chat, it was really interesting to listen how someone at Brad's level talks about and thinks about OpenAI. web3 builders can learn from this approach, especially the focus on localization and building tools that aren't one-size-fits-most. optimizing products for a specific group of users, or building flexibility that can really serve those specific groups matters. listening to and building relationships with the communities you care about is critical!
what do you all think? if i get some comments i'll share more from talks this week
