One gets used to everything... The more I travel, the more I realize how adaptable I am. After the first and second day of a new destination, there might be a touch of apprehension, but by the third, nothing fazes me, and it all becomes the new normal. It's a quality that makes life easier, yet at times, it can also pose a challenge. There are moments when I might not fully grasp the gravity of the situation I find myself in.
For days, you've been following my stories and probably marveling, just like me, at how fear seems absent, and we even engage in light-hearted interactions (let's not use any other term) with the Taliban. Truly, we feel secure, and many have been more than polite towards us. However, on this particular day, I come to realize that often, this is merely a facade, a charade staged for tourists to paint a favorable image, knowing it's easiest to convey through us.
Let me give you an example from that day. In the latter part of the day at Bamyan, after exploring the Buddhas, we strolled around the city and then set out to visit the City of Screams and the Red City (both tied to the bloodshed caused by Genghis Khan). These locations are somewhat challenging to reach, and even though my comfy sandals were on, they weren't the best choice for a bit of "mountaineering." This is where Omid, our guide, often lent a hand, ensuring I didn't slip. Though it seemed like there was nobody around, Omid noticed something was amiss by his expression. Three men were observing us from a nearby hill. It's always like that... no matter where we are, somehow the magic conjures up the presence of the Taliban.
This time, three of them.
And there we were, stopped again, sharing smiles, but I sensed from Omid's face that something wasn't right. One of them held onto his hand, as if in a friendly handshake, yet it lingered for far too long. Finally, they let us go, and once they were out of earshot, Omid revealed what had transpired. They saw me place my hand on his shoulder as we descended and asked him who I was. Was I his wife? He replied, "No, I'm her guide." The next question: "Are you a Muslim?" He answered in the affirmative. And then they inquired, "Why is she touching you?" Because here, any physical contact between a man and a woman who aren't spouses or close relatives is prohibited. Their parting words were a warning that he would end up in jail if this happened again. Worst of all, they told him to act like everything was fine and not tell me what they had discussed.
And earlier that morning, Omid hummed in front of the second part of the group, where in the same way they came to me and said that if he sings again, he will shoot him! And every independent attempt to leave the hotel was with the words, nothing will happen to you, they must not allow themselves to hurt tourists, but for those who are in charge of you...
