Lens definitely needs to open up. The broad consensus on the subject only confirms that. At this point, we are ironing out the details, which are also crucial to get right.
Imho, full instant open up can be too much of a shock for apps, but too slow of a pace will kill the momentum. I propose a rapid open up leading to rather quick permissionlessness in the following way:
➡️ Broadly whitelist based on activity onchain, reputation on X and farcaster, NFT ownership, etc. This can be done in waves to build hype.
➡️ Allow creators, especially bigger ones, to onboard their audiences. Reward/penalize inviter's reputation score based on the quality of users they onboard. Apps could partner with creators too. Also combine all that with announcements for visibility.
➡️ Give apps trailing budgets of free invites.Allow anybody not on the whitelist or invitee list to mint handle + profile for 10-20 WMATIC.
Let the core team define pace and details of the above and metrics where it's ok go fully permissionless. They will figure out how fast will the process be (it can be pretty fast if there's a will).
