March 2001 marked a pivotal moment when the Taliban committed an act that could be deemed a transgression against all of humanity. In the city of Bamyan, once a thriving center of Buddhism, they detonated dynamite, reducing to rubble two Buddha statues from the 6th century, which had once stood among the tallest in the world. One towered at a height of 55 meters, while the other at 38 meters. Why, you might ask? According to Islamic beliefs, idolatry is forbidden, including any form of images, and the Taliban perceived these Buddha statues as potential objects of worship. Moreover, these symbols belonged to a different religion, one that the Taliban vehemently rejected.
Ironically, today they are in the process of restoration, seeking funds from UNESCO, although progress has been slow. Fragments of the destroyed statues are preserved in a dedicated chamber, transformed into a tourist attraction, with entrance tickets being sold. They even have a souvenir shop humorously named "Buddha Canteen" 🤦🏽♀️
Similar to our encounters at Band-e-Amir, we encountered numerous tourists in front of the Buddhas, as well as children who were working there. They carry vessels filled with special herbs, similar to our use of incense, using them to bless people with luck. When they spot foreigners, the children who beg gather around. However, we were cautioned not to give them money. The first reason is to discourage them from begging, and the second is that giving to one could lead to chaos.
Ladies from our group brought gifts for the children, distributing stickers, markers, balloons, and more. Their joyous reaction to these presents far outweighed any monetary gift, and it brought harmony among them. They shared these presents equally and played together, filling our day with their radiant smiles and infectious enthusiasm ❤️

- Found something interesting on my morning walk with @honey.lens in London. Found a street paved with wood! Apparently wood-block paving was popular in London to reduce the noice of the horse carriages and later became less popular as you can imagine the combination of rain and horse shit can make it quite slippery.
