- Since 1970, the population of migratory fish has decreased by more than 80%
Dams, mining, water diversion and pollution are destroying river ecosystems, endangering food security and biodiversity.
Dr. David Jacobi of Lancaster University noted that the scale of population decline is shocking. "The threats posed by barriers to migration, pollution, water abstraction and climate change are becoming cumulative," he said, stressing the need to strengthen monitoring and ecosystem restoration. Dr. Anthony Aku from the National Research Institute of Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) in France added that it is important to take into account pressure factors in both marine and freshwater environments to develop effective management measures.
The study confirms that urgent and comprehensive measures are needed to preserve migratory fish and related ecosystems.
