TL/DR; this piece was inspired by early memories of 1980s nature documentaries that might have influenced Boards of Canada’s sound…
Growing up in Canada, we used to have these short nature documentaries air on local tv. They were produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB for short); a publicly funded film producer that made documentaries and experimental films. It was called *Hinterland’s Who’s Who,* a 60-second PSA, profiling Canadian animals.
Side note: there are so many NFB films that I adore, such as Norman McLaren’s *Dots (*an animation from 1949 in which both sound and visuals were created entirely by drawing directly upon the film), and the apocalyptic cartoon *The Big Snit* by Richard Condie. I'll include links to these in the comments.
The thing about *Hinterland’s Who’s Who* was its theme song - a 10-second solo flute piece, where the combination of vibrato and the wow and flutter of the tape recording produce this distinct, memorable sound. Now, I can’t quite confirm this, but if you're familiar with the Scottish band Boards of Canada, you’d recognize this warbling, pitch-bent, tape emulation that often appears in their music. Were they originally inspired by the *Hinterland’s Who’s Who* theme song?! 🤯
When I created this piece, the flute-like arpeggiated synth reminded me of the Hinterland theme. I added some tape flutter (thank you Abbey Road Vinyl) and suddenly it was giving me some serious BOC vibes.
So, here it is. A little homage to the NFB, Boards of Canada and those little hinterland animals that kept me company when I was a little boy.
