What makes a great social network? Whats working today and whats not?
Comments
- With the proportion that social networks have today, thinking only about the product....immune to censorship (decentralized/app level/protocol?), P2p monetization, ease of creating communities. What doesn't work: centralized advertising, profits from intermediaries with no choice, external interference in the community.
- I would say there’s two main things social media networks do well. #1 recommendations to add to a users social network. Facebook does a great job using data to recommend you friends you may like. On the other hand, #2 they initially do a good job at finding users niche interests and feeding content to them, but I think the algorithms often over correct and lead to extremes. I think that allowing a user to have more exploring and more conservative algorithms, allowing to switch inbetween, and letting the user tweak them with I like this or I dislike this buttons (purely to tweak the algorithm) would help build on what great social networks already do. My latter suggestion is to have a user look through content and like and dislike to train an algo to use instead of building an algo while using the app. This would eliminate pity or autopilot likes and comments and give the user more control in my opinion. I would think of this like they used to calibrate old pens to electronic white boards.
- A great social network is comprised of many different communities that grow individually and together. I think Lens’ multi application system does this.
I think they blend well. I think Lens has a strong user base and community. Next up is network effects. We need strong gravity in the app that pulls people to use it everyday.
We use social media for information. What information here will produce the gravity to bring users to Lens Protocol daily, or weekly.
Lastly, Lens needs integrations with other applications like Sound, Zora, maybe even Open Sea or Pool Together. More and stronger integrations will help it become a on stop shop for a social signals in Crypto.
I mean I haven’t gotten a POAP on Lens yet. Building Gravity & Network Effects is up next.
- A good content recommendation algorithm is a big part imo
- relevant content x valuable interactions
- Lens Fam 🔥
More SPs
More support from Lens, Aave and so on to the real ones.
Simple as dropping some merch, help amplifying content, newbies welcome support.
Do u know what I mean?
- Some prerequisites to a good social network:
➡️ Good feed algos
➡️ Critical mass of users and content for algos to start shining (it gets better over time)
➡️ Even playing field, transparent policies oriented to free discourse
➡️ Good AND fast UX
➡️ Working monetization tools and practices.
➡️ A clear way to distinguish real accounts (verified in some way)
➡️ Transparent moderation (e.g. X Community Notes does wonders). We actually talked about it here: https://hey.xyz/posts/0xe30c-0x9e-DA-6e929bf4
- Great : respect should be the first thing, good moderation level and revenue sharing with content, creators
Bad : bots are the worst nightmare
- Social network w/o advertisements 😊
- Social media with incentives!
- Bots can be handled but full authority to accounts cannot be
If you prioritize money the you won’t build a great app
- I'd like to know, too.
