What does everyone think about having a yearly renewal fee for their Lens handle as a method to prevent bots?

- Well it doesn’t still prevent bots. They can still renew same way we do
- I dunno, couldn’t the accounts for bots also be renewed? I think this will probably take a community effort to report accounts at the protocol level (I’ve started doing this on @buttrfly.lens more regularly). But I guess that could just become an endless cycle if bots keep appearing. It’s an interesting topic for sure that needs to be figured out… 🤔🤖
- I don’t see that as any different than paying for a verification badge. This this is open & trustless web3, someone should be able to develop mechanism for a social credit/reputation/individuality score (shoot there could and should be multiple systems with different priorities) and we, as users, can turn the dial, just like an old stereo, to admit more or fewer into our feed. And I say this with all patience and thanks, knowing that someone else will have to do the work!
The only benefit I could see to some ens-esque rental is handle-squatting, which is something that should be considered…assuming our grandchildren don’t just use emojis for language.
- pretty much the same as 👉https://lenster.xyz/posts/0x0f85-0x1360
- Yearly renewal could reduce protocol adoption and have a side effect: removing more humans than bots.
It depends on the fee, the incentives, and the interest of humans or bots to be on Lens.
Another consideration: if I have to pay it yearly as for ENS, it just means that I am leasing my account
What if I forget to renew my account or cannot afford it?
- I like what optimism is building with their attestation system. At some point you should be able to verify the likeliness of someone being human.
- interesting question. Definitely some major pros and cons to that, not sure. I'd say not really feeling a monthly fee on a decentralized protocol, but i can also see how the bot problem could easily become out of control
- Not a good idea. First you’d have to localize so third world countries could afford it + it would basically mean that the bots have won and the cost for it is being on the users.
- this is a great idea. For the current influence of Lens in the market right now, this is a great idea to not prevent bot but also filter out quality users in the platform
- so who is gonna using Lens
- Maybe but bots can pay same as you or me.
- I guess it will remove more real humans than bots 🤷🏻♂️
- Is that proven to prevent bots? Tbh, the results on the bird app seem mixed.
- bad bad bad idea,,, delete
- nope......
- Well in what dollar range are we talking about?
- everything will pass when they give you the drop
- I think a social score mechanism would work better
- noooooo
- What do you guys think?
