This is an interesting perspective as well. Do you know Phaver? Is that what you mean with the "upstaking"? I also think the we should consider that the carrot and the stick don't necessarily have to be around **financial capital**, but other types of capital can be included there. For example, the punishment for spam comments can be financial (slashing), but the reward for productive comments can (and will naturally) be **social capital** (upvotes, replies = visibility).
