📉 Decline in Lens Protocol Activity: A Wake-Up Call 📉
Hello, everyone, dear members of Lens Protocol. Today, I want to discuss a topic that concerns us
Comments
- @nicocapital.lens @bvdaniel.lens @carlosbeltran.lens @juampi.lens @nilesh.lens
What do you think?
- basically what @danisnearby.lens and @ruthless.lens wrote, it's difficult (tbh imo impossible) to get a story right based on unclustered data.
I guess there are 2 main issues we are still (that's nothing new :-)) facing
1️⃣ missing PMF (for @lensprotocol and apps built on top of @lensprotocol )
2️⃣ very low collect volume (probably the consequence of 1)
Imo the only relevant number at the current state of web3 social (in general) is the number (and quality) of active developers. We are still at the very, very beginning, still copying web2 social apps. What we (web3 social) need is an ecosystem that supports and encourages the development of crazy new app concepts and ideas. Maybe we need an app supporting the process to build new apps 🤷♀️. Test concepts, iterate on ideas, get feedback from the lens community.

music on @lensprotocol was impressively big a few months ago imo, today we have probably 5 artists posting music on lens regularly. @xinobi.lens 's lens exclusive tune was collected 37 times in August https://hey.xyz/posts/0x09f1-0x0159 , most posts got 0 to 2 collects. We can make fun of youtube and spotify all day but if web3 can't attract people who are willing to pay for content they 🤍 I have hard times to imagine that artists they 🤍 will come and stay.

"Are new platforms capturing the users' attention?" no, users still use the web2 platforms they know and love. And this won't change until web3 starts building a better product. For the web0-2 user, not the crypto bro.
- this is like anthropology related
why do people post in first place? reasons can be infinite but most common it’s to express ourselves
why do we need to express ourselves? because that’s how we build an identity
we need people that wants to explore and build that identity
the same way people posting videos on the first youtube was
im not a content creator by any means but i like to post more just because for what the protocol represents:
- it’s like youtube but videos are yours
- it’s like tumblr but posts are yours
- it’s like reddit but without giving money to u/spez (f*ck u spez)
- it’s like twitter but decisions aren’t made by a single white middle age person with privileges who thinks adding X to everything it’s edgy
- it’s like facebook but you can block family members so you can safely post
to recap: this protocol it’s OUR protocol, i feel like i belong to a bigger purpose, am in a place where i can explore and build my identity having the ownership of my content, that’s awesome!
we need to allow everyone to create a handle, the bots problem comes because almost everyone in here talks about crypto, ask twitter crochet if they have bots problems.
not only to allow people to get their handles (that will end the handle’s secondary business) but to talk with our friends and favorite content creators to tell them to come and post here, where the content is theirs, not from a company or a multibillionare.
- less bots and concrete community forming but also numbers less relevant than the content quality itself
- I have nothing to lose 🤭 lfg
- I think this numbers could be misleading.
Because the data doesn’t tell us if the quality of posts and comments has also decreased with the quantity. If it means less bot activity then it’s a good sign.
And I know that zurf was affected heavily when low signal accounts and bots were restricted, so I’ll take this analysis with a grain of salt.
- Isn't it just becouse bots stoped botting xd o don't see almost any bots no more and before it was like 6 bots comments per post

- IDK, a lot of people just say that it is the bear market, but social is still social even if we are in crisis. Maybe it just not “fun enough”.
As you mention, it is a party, and pretty few people out there rather web3 social than the dopamine drug of web2.
- Interesting data analysis, where did you get those figures?
- #JamFrens is here to change that.
- People Leave crypto in a bear market..
- Too new to have answers but really appreciate the data. Thanks for putting it together
- Hi, mind sharing the link for the data?
- I had this concern some days back
And i think one of the reasons for the decline is that some people were restricted from accessing the Lens Protocol Apps in the usual gasless ways.
Always signing in transactions on your wallet defeats the purpose of a smooth SoFi experience.
My thought.
- Less bots that's why
- What ever happen to Wav3s? Maybe that’s why it’s in decline?
- Hmmm
- Hey Cristian!
Your question piqued my interest, so I decided to dive a bit deeper and create two additional charts:
👉🏻 One similar to yours, but segmented by profiles based on their number of followers.
👉🏻 The same chart but spanning the past 6 months.
What are my takes from it? There is still not enough information to jump to any conclusions at all. When analyzing in a higher timeframe (6 months) we see that the 30d variation is basically irrelevant, and is probably correlated to outside events like the crypto market or even seasonal events.Surprisingly, even in the segmented analysis, it doesn't seem to be directly related to the recent bot purge, as we didn't observe a significant drop in the smaller follower segments.
However, what stands out is that the most active segment, accounting for about 50% of posting and mirroring activity, is the group with follower counts ranging from 20 to 200. This group seems to be the driving force behind the movements we observe on Lens. With this in mind, one of the questions that emerges is: What motivates these profiles to consistently use Lens?
In the context of the social media landscape, this segment isn't comprised of professional content creators but rather consumers or aspiring creators. Do they have sufficient motivation to spend money on Lens, or is there a potential audience they can target to transition into professional creators? These questions tailor to a missing piece in Lens IMO right now: sponsors.
Sponsors inject funds and products into the social media ecosystem. They support creators, who, in turn, introduce consumers to their products and enable the creation of free content.
So, 3 more questions come to mind:
👉🏻 Are our creators prepared to generate leads for sponsors professionally?
👉🏻 Are our consumers ready to become leads?
👉🏻 Is Lens ready to support this scale?
The more I try to answer any of those questions, the more questions come to my mind 😂
So, I'll continue charting and analyzing to fuel this discussion.
I did some Lens user segment analysis on my latest #LensForestDiaries post, if you find it interesting:

- Like many have mentioned here, I believe the reduction in bots, and low quality users play a huge role in the analysis.
I frankly think this is a natural progression as inevitably the community and content quality increases as many still here aren’t in it for a “airdrop”.
Once we get more apps and public access opens up people will be overtaken by the endless possibilities that they won’t look to ever leave, as a matter of fact I think you won’t be able to escape Lens it’ll be embedded everywhere.
Lens has the ability to weather any crypto cycle.
- My guess is that there's too much content oriented towards crypto. Help spread the word about diverse creators and assist them in getting noticed. That way, a bear market won't negatively impact social media, as the majority of the content is unrelated to the crypto market.
- I would like to have more invites, several friends have asked me recently
- Nice data analysis, if I may ask where did you get those data and figures??
- We need more users on the platform 🫂
- To be honest it's about AIRDROP people are here for AIRDROP that's it first they thought if they will use the platform they will get some benefit as a airdrop but when they realize it's just a waste of time then they start leaving the platform now only those user who have actual interest on innovation are stay here it's my honest feedback to lens and stani.
- People Leave crypto in a bear market.
- youtuminao
- good analysis
hope Bull comes soon
Zurf lens
- Great thoughts
Big potential here
ánimo Zurf
- love your thoughts
pls keep building Zurf
- over
- Also many lens holders were restricted at one point and still are in ”lens jail” so cant do anything really on the protocol
- so sad ...
- i want bull
- The industry is quiet and needs to be dynamic.

- wen token?
- Many leave the web3!!
- lfggg
- Socal app is hard to papule
- It is bear market, it is normal!
- oh so that
- Lose so much!
- Over the past few months, I've noticed some concerning trends:
📉 Posts have decreased by 21.65%
📉 Comments have dropped by 12.87%
📉 Mirrors have fallen by 28.71%
- Winter is coming...
- Thanks for this post
- This is a call to the community and the developers to discuss and address these concerns.
- What I see is that few projects makes confusion between "owning big money nfts" and "good quality content creator". Confusing intelligence with richness. Like this the only possible trend is down, in the abyss of fullness!
- The growth is necessary
