We started around 6 months, which is considered late by some these days. We have friends that started closer to 3. We tried many different methods, because the "cry it out" method just seemed too callous, but in the end it's the thing that actually worked. It was really difficult that first night, still fairly difficult the next, and really not bad the third day. Since then she goes down when it's time, mostly without fuss, and sleeps 11 - 12 hours every night; she's about to be 4.
