- Respectfully disagree with you here. Chime house is just one of the many styles of music Four Tet, aka Kieran Hebden, does well. But on this note, even if you aren't the biggest fan of this kind of tune of his, the combo of Squid Soup's lighting (pictured) and these particular kind of synth sounds is a winning one in terms of an electronic music live show. One that I'd definitely encourage experiencing irl.
Beyond this style, Hebden has so many other types of music he makes, produces, showcases too. His Text label label is a good example of that – there's everything from niche soul reworks to the brilliant Madlib record he produced to a Nelly Furtado edit to his Burial collab and on. I love his mammoth Spotify playlist as well. This doesn't mean I'm a fan of everything Four Tet does, not so. When it comes to Hebden's own albums, I think he is often in need of a talented co-producer to edit his ideas down. A la what he did with Madlib, for example. Recent albums sounds same-y, or could have been an EP versus an LP.
And in terms of FT's recent collabs, Skrillex's performative brand of electronic music where "DJs" dance on tables like the second coming of Steve Aoki is so, so off-putting. But, this is how a lot of young fans are discovering dance music for the first time, and tbh to that I say: it could be a lot worse.
Basically, Four Tet's rise couldn't have happened to a nicer musician––someone who is a true head and deep digger, but can also create a banging pop edit too. I think Hebden has a special talent for diving into subcultures as well as the mainstream when he makes his music. And his current commercial successes are so deserved.
Plus, having been there myself, Four Tet's Plastic People sets of yore really were as great as everyone said they were. I have a bit of fomo missing him play with Floating Points at Roundhouse tonight because my tinnitus is acting up!
