The lighting controls in the 3d minter does indeed only work for making a GIF or screenshot right away. You can affect how lighting works by changing the metallic or roughness values of your 3d model. If you want to go really deep you can even have your own 'roughness map' with the 3d model. That can have a lot of effect on how the lighting will work on the 3d model.
