I agree that IPFS is not perfect solution, and most users don't understand the relevance of pinning. We have Filecoin and Arweave which fill most of those gaps, though.

It's easy to assume users don't care when they're not asked pointed questions. I suspect that if you were to ask a social media user, with years of posts and connections, if they care whether all of those followers and their content disappeared without warning or reason, the answer would be a clear and resounding, "yes".
If you asked them whether they're happy to be censored at the whim of billionaire special interests?
If you asked what happens if the US government seizes the major social networks to spread propaganda?
But I think the better question is: why build Web3 if *you* don't care?

It's a funny coincidence that the post cannot be referenced. There appears to be a bug in the Degree of Separation reference modules that prevents anyone from commenting on or mirroring that post (including me!).

- I’d like to be able to choose. There’s some stuff that I might post for the fun of the moment (like memes) that this actually like to disappear after a while. Then, on the collectible side, I really like the idea that the stuff can be perpetual.
- I care. IMO the whole premise of decentralized social is that if a platform goes down it doesn’t take all the data and media you’ve contributed along with it. Or if you get kicked from a platform, your data remains accessible onchain.
As for IPFS, if secure storage is an issue doesn’t Arweave provide an alternative? From what I understand, files can be stored permanently on the Arweave network. I suppose there is a cost involved though…
But, yeah, as someone who is not a dev, I’m sure there is a lot I don’t get. So, I can understand if there are complexities involved. But I do think it’s a high priority for apps that adopt the ‘decentralized social’ label to actually be decentralized.
