"well, should've come sooner then" won't be an acceptable response to anyone who build up a brand. Hardly anyone grabs all the handles on all the platforms that might gain traction at some point. That Lens was invite only probably didn't help on that front too. If even the marketing departements of big blockchain networks don't manage to get their handles in time, it certainly won't be the case for classic brands/companies who might want to extend their social media presence into the cryptospace. The simple truth is - that unless Lens has become a social media juggernaut that everyone needs to be on - companies/brands/platforms will just say "ok well it's a no from us then" and not be active on Lens if there's no way to get their official handles. Their marketing material certainly wont state: "Follow XYZXYZXYZ on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, Threads, .... and XYZXYZXYZ_01 on Lens".
