I would say easiest is to let old mentions (legacy) to follow handles instead of profiles

- Not sure if I got your idea right. Let's map it out:
➡️ Legacy mentions remain connected to the same handles. Easy (nothing to change), but can get messy. E.g. User was mentioned many times by their handle, and then changed it to a new one. The posts user was mentioned in might become tricky to understand. It's even worse if user sold the old handle - now somebody else is referred to in the old posts, often in wrong context.
➡️ Legacy mentions are connected to profiles instead of handles. No info issues, but more complicated. Post text would have to be altered by the app when saving it, to convert the typed-in @handle_dot_lens to @profile_id. Maybe it's an option, but everybody needs to comply to avoid the mess.
➡️ What if the indexer tracks handle changes and provides additional context together with affected post's content? Apps would then decide how to display it, e.g., as an icon next to the handle text (with more info on hover/click), a notification next to the post, different formatting, etc.
Which one is best?
