Good point, maybe before there is a good algo on communities there should be just neat way to find the most relevant

Just have two tabs, one called "my feed" and the other "explore". My feed can just be content from everyone I follow and explore is new content decided by an algorithm. That way I can see new content when I want, instead of having it forced into my face in the middle of my feed (when it's likely irrelevant crap). That's just aggravating.
