I like the tabs it helps me to check if i didnt forget to reply to any comments

I believe that a good way to balance would be to be able to catalog the levels of interaction between members in preferences.....so.....some would appear in both.....I think appearing in the feed ends up generating a little more than interpersonal interaction...excellent question raised......
Mentions and comments could be in one, collects separate for sure
