Why do we need new technology? Existing isn't servicing enough?

- Why do we need cars when horses can get us from A to B too?
We as a species survived so far by challenging the status quo and looking for enhancements that can make our lives easier. We had horses, then we wanted cars and planes etc.
- I suppose it depends on your point of view.
If you think technology is a bad thing because it's killing the planet and widening the gap between rich and poor, then yes, no doubt existing technology is more than sufficient.
But if you think that technology is there to constantly solve the challenges facing humanity, then not only is it not enough, I'd say it's going to have to evolve a lot further to save us all.

- Whats the purpose of technology?
- I don't think we 'need' it, yet even basic technology like stone tools or fire

- Short answer: We will *always* need it.
Long answer: Life is unpredictable. There are considerable situations in which new tech could save many lives: avoiding the death of mothers when giving birth to babies and curing and preventing known and unknown diseases (e.g., cancer, neurological diseases, a new pandemic), among many others. Imagine now an eye surgery. It is known that in the 1700s, Euler got blinded because of many eye surgeries in that period; nevertheless, he still produced numerous mathematical principles that guide our present tech. He would have benefited from (new) tech if he had one, don’t you think?
